This is the first British event of the year which is being held outdoors
David, tell me you are joking? Outdoors, in Sunderland, in early March?
I'm about 20 miles away and it has rained here all day - the only good thing about that was that it cleared away all the snow still remaining from last week!
I need to know, because if I do go on Thursday I will need to dress differently if it is outdoors or risk pneumonia.
Well, to tell you the truth I'm not totally sure. I've been told by one of the players that this event is outdoors but that player has subsequently withdrawn from the entry list so he may be wrong.
Bladetiger should know for certain. Hopefully he'll tell us when he posts his link to the Sherwood report for rd1 today.
I'm hoping this won't be the case but I have an uneasy feeling that it will end up in a Guez v De Chaunac final.
De Chaunac absolutely destroyed by bachelot 1 & 2, so that wont be the case, also draw that has guez , de C and Bachelot all in same quarter so frenchies will be turning on each other.
Whoever comes out of that quarter must be playing well, but draw couldnt have been better froma british perspective, especially with Bloomfield (just) managing to beat eleskovic. Now just need delgado to have got past qureshi and will have been a great first day.
Summary of those through to the next round: Lee and Sherwood, to play each other; Goodall and Smith, to play each other; Bloomfield to play Motti of Italy; Burn and Mackin, to play each other; and Auckland and Bamford, to play each other.
Richard did really well in edging such a tight final set [8-6 in the tiebreak !], great to see him showing mental strength and stamina to come through such a tricky match, he may have had to save match points. Eleskovic was a dangerous opponent, he beat Sherwood in straight sets indoors last season.
Unfortunately the major surprise of the day was with 2nd seed Jamie Delgado losing to Pakistan's Aisam Ul-Qureshi in 3 sets: 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. I had a feeling Delgado would be the main British casualty for today as Qureshi's been on better form so far in 2006 and plays a very aggressive game, attacking the net a lot which is suited to the indoor courts. Aisam has reached the semis of a futures in China and last week he reached the Wolfsburg Challenger quarters after qualifying, eventually losing to Alex Waske in a final set tiebreak.
Daniel Evans had another hugely impressive performance, taking the 1st set 6-4 against James Auckland !!! Auckland recovered to win the next two 6-2, 6-2 but it's still a stunning scoreline and shows that Daniel Cox is not the only British teenager to watch out for. Quite a few of the youngsters are starting to make their mark, hopefully it won't be long before Daniel Evans gets his first ranking points. Daniel Evans is another example of David Felgate's new policy - he feels that it's best for the really promising juniors to skip the junior circuit and go straight into the futures and satellites.
Rd2: Guez v De La Nava Sarstrand v Bachelot Lee v Sherwood Smith v Goodall Bloomfield v Motti Mackin v Burn Auckland v Bamford Marx v Qureshi
How do you see these rd2 matches going ?
For me:
Lee v Sherwood: I predict a 3 setter possibly being decided in a 3rd set tiebreak. They've played 4 times with Sherwood having won each time, most recently in the GB 1 satellite this year when Sherwood won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. It'll be a very tight match but I'll predict Sherwood to win as his head-to-head record may give him a psychological advantage if it goes the distance.
Smith v Goodall: They've played once before with Smith winning 6-4, 6-2 in GB F2 last year on indoor hard. However, Goodall was in imperious form in rd1 dropping just 2 games and I reckon he may have too much firepower on serve. I'll predict Goodall to win in 2.
Burn's a flair player and did extremely well to beat Richard Irwin after almost 6 months away from pro tennis but I think that Mackin's speed and consistency will enable him to win in straight sets, Burn really goes for his shots but he'll be still very rusty and he may make too many errors.
Tomorrow, Lee plays Goodall and Bloomfield plays Burn - so at least 2 Brits through! Auckland plays Marx, the other quarter final is a completely non-Brit affair between Munoz-de la Nava and Bachelot.
I'm hoping to go tomorrow, the OOP isn't out yet but if past experience of this place is anything to go by, they will have nearly all the matches on together and I will have to choose which to watch.
David, if I go, do you want text messages or just for me to post the results when I get home?
