RE: Week 30 - ATP 500 - bet-at-home Open - German Tennis Championships, Hamburg (clay)

Great news! A pity I missed it (again). Life keeps getting in the way of my tennis-watching. Another nice ranking jump for Aljaz

Brilliant result! Presumably this is his first ATP 500 QF?
I'd make Fognini favourite (presuming he wins his 2nd round), but would give Aljaz a fighting chance.

QF:  (8) Fabio Fognini (ITA) WR 32 (CH = 13 in March last year) vs Aljaz Bedene WR 67

Here's hoping the second set has the same outcome once the weather relents :)

Crossing my fingers that the bad version of Fabio shows up for the QF.

He can be sublime, particularly on clay, but he pretty much is the definition of inconsistency.

Up to about 57-60 by my reckoning without seeing who's defending what this week

Fognini's European clay form appears to have been rather underwhelming this year, particularly against what he has shown in the past on the surface.

So here's hoping ...

Fognini's the only seed left in the bottom half of the draw, Bautista having fallen to Aljaz, Mónaco (6) to the French qualifier, Lucas Pouille, & Robredo (2) to one of the latter's compatriots, Benoít Paire!

Yes but let's not forget that Paire won his maiden ATP title last week. Not that much of a shock.

Didn't expect to get to see Aljaz when I go to Hamburg for the quarters, he clearly just couldn't resist being cheered by me. Great week, here's hoping for more.

Aljaz up to 55 on live rankings, but a lot of players around him still in, so hard to say where he will end up next week. Another win (big ask but possible!) would probably take him into the top 50 though.

Equally importantly he'll also be pushing to around 38-41 in the race, even if he goes out to Fognini in the quarters. Our Aljaz is having a great year :)

Well done, too, to Ali's British coach, James Davidson, age 41 and ex WR 607 (singles) and WR 279 in doubles
