RE: Davis Cup 2015 - World Group Semi-Final - 18th-20th September

At least Evo will have a much more supportive captain in his corner than I recall him once having in Lithuania.

Thanks RJA! Any idea whether Evo got replaced in Istanbul? If so surely the fact that someone else has the chance to earn those points would confirm he did not have that chance and make giving him the points the fairest thing?

I think the rule would be pointless otherwise.

That break at the start of the second set was sensational. Such quality from Andy.

bet365 match betting at 2-0* Andy second set :

Andy 1/1000, Thanasi 100/1

That's actually kinda tempting, I mean what's even the odds of him falling over and injuring himself, says he so positively. But you wouldn't, would you ?

Evo was replaced in Istanbul by a LL but that really isn't the point and the rule seems very clear.

An unfortunate further, but more incidental ( if not to Evo if he wins a live rubber ) consequence of him not being called to be in Glasgow in the first place.

Thanks for the info, RJA. Given I take it that the rule is there to stop players withdrawing late and appearing somewhere else and collecting points, I agree that having a LL in place is rather irrelevant.

I assume that it is a general rule with the Davis Cup being treated like any other tournament ? I suppose one could argue a special case for being called up to serve your nation in the men's flagship team tennis tournament, but arguable is what I think it would be.

Edit: Ah, sorry RJA, I had missed you giving that rule that is specifically about being called up for the Davis Cup.

Kokkinakis only won 5 points in that set, and 2 of those were Murray Double Faults.

Murray all over him like a rash. Which is great, only I might not get back in time to see Evo start at this rate. Slow down Muzza, I need more time!!

Yea, think how many more aces you would have a chance to serve if it went to 5 sets

Big decision by Leon to bring in Evo - let's hope he's right again he's done a very good job as captain so far except failing to get marcus Willis to train with his first choice doubles partners but that's the mindset of a businessman like me who always has a eye on the short term goals within a long term strategy

Further to the above post. Quoting from the ATP rulebook

9.0.4 (c) (3)

If a player is a late substitution to the team and was released from another tournament that same week, he will not be eligible to earn points for that Davis Cup tie. A player only has the opportunity to earn points in one event per week.

Had Evo withdrawn from Istanbul last week when he was still on the alternate list he would have been okay.

He's quoted in an article by Barry Flatman in today's Times, under the heading "Prodigal son returns to write last chapter", as follows:

There has even been a tinge of irony connected with Evans's recall to the Davis Cup team this week because he was scheduled to be playing in a Challenger event in Istanbul.  "My flights were booked and paid for and then I decided on the Monday morning I wasn't going," he said.

"I had to be up early in the morning on Monday to get to Luton Airport, which was a bit of a jaunt, and so I just decided against it because it was a bit of a rush.  They wouldn't give me a late start."

Typical Evo! disbelief  Not sure about his use of the word "jaunt", either! confuse   Did he mean "hike"?

Off topic, Andy home & dry by 4, 0 & 3 in under two hours.  biggrin
