I've known Amandine since she was a tiddler. (Never that small, though, used to tower above her contemporaries).
Comes from a VERY serious, well-connected tennis family.
Mother (German or German family), is currently WR 2 in the world (used to be top-ranked in the world) for her category, champion of france for countless years in her category, etc. etc. Father is a top tennis coach with the FFT and 'important guy'. (Also, ex top-50 in seniors some time ago).
Amandine has been brought up to be a hard-hitting, aggressive tennis player, not much apart from tennis in her life (only child of their marriage).
She's a pretty girl and was always a bit of a 'little princess'. Temperamental doesn't say the half of it. But, hey, a bit of 'attitude' does no harm . . . But certainly not known for being the smartest/canniest player on the court (to say the least).
Was very good friends with Kiki who, obviously, has overtaken her and been a lot more successful, to date. Not always easy.
She seems to be taking her time but slowly going in the right direction, although with the help of wildcards etc. (obviously!).
Sounds pretty grim. I wish her well (except against Ms W-S) and hope that she is able to find a niche of her own as and when she wishes.
Yes, I know what you mean.
Actually, however, I always got the impression that Amandine really liked playing tennis (although her Dad, as coach, was definitely pretty hard on her at times).
There were some others in her clique at the time (near enough her level, although physically maybe not quite so imposing) who looked far more as though it was an effort and done to please.
They all dropped out near 17/18 years old - went off to do interesting further studies (which actually was something that Amandine, if I remember rightly, was not very good at (to put it mildly) nor interested in - Lord knows what she'd have done if it hadn't been for her tennis).
I really think Em would benefit from playing down but shes picking such a hard schedule for herself. The tennis is there to win these matches but if she played a couple of weaker events she could get some wins under her belt and get some momentum going.
She's lost so many matches to good players this year by fine margins.
