Jo not serving well enough today, first serve % too low, some individual good points but Maria is playing well and Jo is rushing even when she doesn't need to. Forehand is very, very, hitchy this afternoon.

It's the luck of the draw but it's a bit galling seeing Urzula Radwanska about to win her match-up in maybe less time than Jo has detained MS; hey ho cry

Jo loses 62 62

Tried hard, big drop in her level from previous fornight which was a bit of a shame, albeit against a much better opponent. Could have made it much closer though, a few loose errors where she seemed to feel under more pressure than she actually was but that's hardly surprising.

Bit of a bummer draw, but a big US hardcourt swing coming up. Hopefully she can keep the good stuff coming.

Jo goes down 2& 2 after 1 hour 22 minutes; by no means a whitewash; hope for a kinder draw next year :)

R1: KONTA, Johanna (GBR) WC 126 lost to SHARAPOVA, Maria (RUS) 4 4 2-6 2-6

Jo earned several break points and broke once, played some excellent points and hit winners but Sharapova was putting a lot of pressure on Jo's serves leaving Jo unprepared for the returns. Jo will be prepared for the pressure next time. Jo should feel confident going into the next phase of the season.

It was always without doubt that Sharapova would win this match and at least Jo was not done and finished in less than a hour 1 and 1. She tried. Like others here have said she got a bad draw after what has been a great period for her. But her results the last few weeks really should tell her she can get back in the top 100 asap. More tournaments like the recent ones at main tour level and she has the potential to go up another gear. Just unlucky today but what a chance to play on the greatest court of all.
