Final thoughts on Laura's performance: Encouraging, better than expected given her time out and losing 0&1 last week. The serve is not only rusty with lots of double faults but also about 10mph down on full pace so plenty more serving drills needed. Her baseline game looked pretty good at times, obviously the occasional groundstoke was dumped into the net but she hit a good number of winners and was competitive in the long points.
Today's match was competitive which would also have benefited her, compared to at Eastbourne where Gavrilova was probably able to win without getting out of her comfort zone. The crowd was also fully engaged and behind her, and so certainly felt like the WC was justified.

A131 I think you are being a bit harsh there. Had Naomi won the first set and she was close to doing so, she would probably have won the match certainly would have been close. Her opponent would have beaten better players than Naomi I believe today and seems to have a perfect game for grass court tennis which is odd for a clay courter.
Also Naomi won last year and gave Wozniacki a good game in round 2. She has proven she can compete with top 100 players on her day just lacks a bit of direction and some more astute tactical positioning. I could see her having the same type of career as Bally or Anne if she had that little bit more hard work and direction.
Loads of players on their day "can compete with top 100 players", indeed at times beat them. That doesn't mean that they deserve to play in Slams more than much more consistent year round players or players who have qualified to be in the MD. What she might and could do is not up there which what she has done on a consistent basis.
I have nothing against Naomi in particular on thsi, indeed British WCs in general, but I am against the "system" where all the Slams dole out all these MD WCs, particularly to relatively pretty lowly ranked players. Sorry if I've mentioned this before
Are you only against WC's for slams? If so the problem then is it puts our players at a massive disadvantage over many other countries. There is a real benefit to players development getting exposed to the higher levels even if they lose and the number of higher level events we have in the UK is already failry low. For example if all the Grand Slams were to lose the WC's the US players would still be able to pick up plenty of WC's for the countless higher level tournaments, certainly more than we have even with the longer grass season. So if WC's were removed from Slams then they should also be removed from all other events as well with maybe the PR system beefed up to help with players who have been out injured now WC's aren't an optio
I imagine Laura will have a wee smile at Bouchards result
Bouchard's result is not surprising. She has been struggling since the beginning of the year, losing lots of first round matches in tournaments. Nothing new. Too much celebrity stuff on her part.
Well done Heather Too soon to say much about Ms. Robson, but she's played two matches without any sign of pain or recurrence of injury, so that's an important first step

Total, or best of all GB ladies combined since Kournikova turned pro (1995)
I thought other than the serve, the rest of Laura's game wasn't a million miles away from what it was before the wrist problems struck. It's actually almost 2 years since she has been 100% fit, right wrist flaring up first summer 2013. Her speed around the court was about the same, she didn't run out of gas at the end of the match, in terms of points played it was the equivalent of 3 sets. Her serve though was way down on what it was, hopefully that can be put right reasonably quickly, because it is a huge asset.
Just needs to stay injury free !!!! A couple of deep runs in the upcoming challengers will just be what the doctor orders, and then we'll know 100% that she's back on track.
So overall very positive and great to see her so happy to be back on court.
Very happy for Hev, I was most confident that she would get a win, Garcia not being at home on the grass, and hopefully she can use the confidence boost to get past Hantuchova, who'll fight to the bitter end, should be a cracker.
