Whilst Liam has undoubtedly not taken his chances, this is his first Wimbledon and possibly his first 5 set match? Nerves and inconsistency are inevitable, but from what I've seen he's handled himself reasonably well and there's potential for the future. He's still only a young guy. And I don't think Mato's actually played that badly.
Now, if Ward bottles it tomorrow, then I'd be the first to criticise.
Regardless of all else (and nicofrance has a point,, as does savva, on the other hand), Liam's backhand has been a thing of joy - I remember reading he'd been working hard on it and, goodness, it's paid off.
Main draw, admittedly, but he's by no means a stranger to the place, having won the boys' doubles title (with Tom Farquharson) in 2010 & finished runner-up in the boys' singles the following year.
