Oh dear. I saw the first set, and wasn't too worried when he got broken early in the second. Then I had to leave it and wasn't expecting quite such a collapse. Still, taking the first set so close against the 15 or 16 seed shows promise for the future.

I'm afraid to say that Goffin was a class above. Time on his side though and great to get the first one under his belt.

Didn't expect Liam to win but he certainly got stuck in during the first set. Goffin just too big a step but really hope Liam can kick on during the second half of the year. Some good challenger runs would push him nearer the top 100.

Great effort by Liam, thought he stepped it up even more today, but a high class opponent plus a gruelling game at the start of the 2nd really ate into his energy resources and that was that. If Liam can match his ranking points from last year for the rest of the year, I fancy him to make a big step next year, if he doesn't it'll just take a bit longer to get up to that top 100 mark.

Brilliant stuff! When was the last time we had FOUR British men in the 2nd round at Wimbo?!

2006, according to the Beeb, Tin Pan being one of them.

Just for the record, the other three were Andy, Martin Lee & Bloomers.

I have no idea which one Tin Pan is referring to but Delgado and Henman also made R2.

I should have said "the other four", having inadvertently overlooked Jamie D.

"Tin Pan" is none other than Tim Henman.  The reference will mean s0d all to anyone who wasn't reading Clare Balding's weekly column for the Standard a few years back, when he & Greg Rusedski were in their pomp.  She commented one week that a friend of hers referred to the pair of them as "Tin Pan" & "Jet Ski".  The names tickled me &, inevitably, stuck as a result!

Re: Liam.

I don't think we can fault his effort this year. To win a first ever ATP main tour match at Grand Slam level after coming back from two sets down to win 3-2 is no mean feat. I was absolutely delighted by his R1 result, as were several Twitter followers who promptly set up an account for his beard. I think catching the attention and the hearts of a nation via Twitter is about as good as it gets in this modern age.

I do not fault his performance against Goffin at all. He fought hard in the first set, but as these things often go with a rankings disparity such as this, is that first set is lost then the younger, lower-ranked player can often have the stuffing knocked out of him a little. He's still a good young player and if he makes decent enough progress over the next couple of weeks then I see no reason why he can't push for the top 100 and maybe further. This tournament, and that win in particular, will definitely act as a confidence boost - especially after snapping his losing streak at Wimbledon.

Unlucky Liam, but the draw was tough and following up a result like the Matosevic result with another win was always going to be a tough ask. I look forward to following his progress throughout the year and then willing him on to the third round next year.

Well played, lad.

The points and experince he will take away from Wimbledon will do him no halm, Liam had a great Autumn of hard court tennis, this year also playing well on clay not quite getting the results. He is still in a strong position to drive up his ranking as he returns to hard court challenger tennis as opposed to having to spend the summer on a North American ITF grind, did him no halm but not that lucrative point wise. Should make exciting viewing through to US open qualifying

Sorry to do this as I am not normally a pedant in the slightest but for your own good - you have a weird autocorrect thing going on - It's spelt harm not halm

and I agree with your point

Saying a little prayer this morning for Wardy first up on court 2; he may or may not have cracked the top 100 with his R1 win but here's hoping he can put it beyond doubt today :)
