A quick perspective from someone who reads nearly everything on here but doesn't post too often.

I find that nearly all of the posts on here are from people who just want to see British tennis players do well. This sometimes spills into frustration when they don't do as we as people think that they should, but in no way does it cross any sort of line. I posed some questions about the best tournaments to go to this year and the advice and support from posters was excellent. Personally, I wouldn't change anything about the forum.

Well, apart from players giving us the opportunity to celebrate a few more wins! So good luck to all of them over the coming months.

I am definitely one who is guilty of judging a match on live scores and making assumptions - but guess what, if live scores are all I have to go on, I will continue to make those assumptions based on the live scores until better evidence comes to hand. As a side note, I will class a loss from 3 MPs up as a choke 99% of the time when based purely on live scores, unless there is a good reason not to. I appreciate some will view this as unfair, but that doesnt really worry me because they can, and indeed do, challenge that as they see fit. I do not use live scores to cast wider aspersions on a players mental strength, work ethic etc. but am more than happy to suggest I think a player has choked based on the scores I have seen, however narrow-minded, inaccurate or offensive people find that!

The racism comment is totally misguided and as that has been addressed concisely already. I would suggest that racism has wrongly been used in place of xenophobia, but that is beside the point, since neither are apparent on this forum. There is absolutely no benefit in enforcing a rule that all posters must like all British tennis players equally and frankly if someone feels that a player has changed nationality simply to give them more options in their tennis career, that is their opinion and they have every right to express it without being branded a bigot. (Not suggesting that is the case or that people do indeed think that).

A masters degree in teaching yet unable to differentiate between an asterisk and an apostrophe. Interesting.

TMH, I don't want to interfere with the ins and outs of this argument, but the use of the asterisk instead of apostrophe was explained earlier - computer (or more likely keyboard) problem.

I must say I've noticed a more negative attitude coming through in the past year or so.

I feel sometimes people let person feelings take over in their comments. I'm not saying people can't be negative or share opinions. I think some who post here may have a personal vendetta or grudge towards some players and that's not on. I can understand some peoples perspective e.g Klein but for most I can't see any reasonable argument for the negativity.

As far as I'm concerned, this is not a pom-pom waving cheerleaders site - it's a discussion forum. So I don't expect 100% positivity and undying supporrt....in fact, that would be boring.

And I saw nothing in the Boggo comments that were offensive. And, indeed, offensive to whom? Has Boggo himself complained?

I once was going to post a comment about one player that was supposed to be funny, and positive, and didn't because, in light of certain issues the player had, i thought it might just be thought of as un-PC. As it happens, in a private message to steven I mentioned it and he said the player herself would most certainly have found it very funny and wasn't it a shame that we're all now second-guessing everyone's hyper-sensitivity..... i don't mean a million years that steven was condoning being rude to someone but just that lots of people are very quick to see things as offensive nowadays.

And of course people will interpret things from livescores - if we didn't no one would make any comment about far-flung places except the score and well done/bad luck. Not much of a forum ....

Anyway, net net, my belief is that the level of respect on this forum is brilliant, overall. And well done, Maddie, and all the moderators - especially about killing all those blasted kitchen site stuff - you're doing a great job.

Comparison between two players rankings if someone compares Kyle to Tim Henman if he gets to semis but no grand slams would that be derogatory? No is the answer. So never meant to be disparaging to anyone really. The post is in frustration at a failure to achieve plain and simple I was hoping for the 100 and had a celebratory one for that.

People are offended far too easily I find it amazing that anyone who claims can be a teacher can be offended I wonder what type of teaching they have experienced. Personally there is just about nothing I find offensive in life and I am never offensive to anyone. In a grown up adult environment that's how it should be. But that's just my opinion. One which we are all entitled to of course.

Forums are a democratic right to express yourself if done in a legal way of course. Only defamatory statements or criminal actions should not be tolerated. A sense of humour is important in life too. Tennis fans sometimes lack in this regard. Stuck up middle class attitudes damage the game in this country in a lot of respects and elitism contributes to our lack of success.

With regards to players I support them all particularly when I attend tournaments. With praise though must also come constructive criticism. One thing I can't stand is some of the younger players usually when they develop a sense of entitlement. Plenty of examples over the last ten years of players guilty of this. Andy Murray is a shining example of what it takes. It is hard to be a tennis player and the lifestyle is cruel and unrewarding but the cream will always rise to the top. If players don't like people commenting on their serve or anything else rather than being petulant and making smart comments on Twitter and other social media they should take it in their stride. Imagining a footballer or other sportsman doing that. It wouldn't happen. If someone criticised my game I would either listen to it if justified or laugh it off maybe even use it as a spur. I actually think this forum is very kind to players even with poor results there is always a hug and backslap good effort. In fact Id be more concerned about creepy stalker tweets rather than someone saying my forehand was off to be honest.

Anyway it's been a successful couple of days for the ladies in particular. Will be good to see more TV time for Jo and Heather and hopefully one or two qualifiers for Wimbledon. As good as streams on betting sites are there is nothing better than seeing our guys and girls on the big screen.

. . . . . Yes, there were issues regarding comments about Aljaz. But the only thing to me that was offensive there was the inuendo directed by one particular poster against RJA, just because he said he would for now continue to support . . . . .

You refer to me, presumably. I suggest you check your facts first before posting distortions like the one above.

I made no innuendo against RJA. On the contrary, he made a false accusation against me (that I was accusing him of racism, which I did not - check my post). He also used offensive language in doing so. But no one here had the courage or gumption to pick him up on his ill-judged over-reaction, caused in my opinion by his own discomfort with his rather weak position to do with differing levels of support for true or dodgy Brits. Instead you rather lamely stood by his false accusation. Rather than wipe his post, someone wiped mine which was a response to what I considered his own abusive post.

As for the topic, there is some validity to what Jirwan writes in my view. But like I said before, the more these non-Brit Brits win, the more British they become.

So basically Jirwan, the net effect of your post is to resurrect all the old gripes and insults (whether founded or not) which had been pretty much nicely laid to rest ?????

I'm sure it wasn't your intent but it seems to have done more harm than good......

Those remarks apply as much to Indiana as anyone.

I have no particular desire to go over this argument again but I feel compelled to respond to the implication that I consider Aljaz, for this is who we a are talking about, a "dodgy Brit". As I made clear at the time, and have done so again in this thread, my most enthusiastic level of support is reserved for those players who I have watched play from the early stages of their professional career. It has nothing to do with their place of birth or whether or not I consider them a "true Brit". Nothing that I have said about Aljaz has indicated anything less than respect for him and in fact I am more supportive of him than some "born and bred" British players. You may think that my position is a weak one but I would suggest that your position that I should support Aljaz enthusiastically simply because he is now a British national is the weak position.

If I did overreact to your implications, and I don't think I did, it is because those implications were thoroughly offensive to me. I am a fan of many British tennis players but I am also a fan of many non-British tennis players. I couldn't less if someone is born in London, Birmingham, Paris, Perth or Ljubjlana. My support of players is mostly based on three factors

1. Whether I enjoy watching them play.

2. Having watched then from early in their career.

3. Their attitude and personality.

Allegation of racism totally unfounded I for one though  love the idea of taking advantage of migration to the uk with the positives for British tennis - Klein & alja

its certainly given our British born players in the top 25 a bit of  healthy competition

Your views are fair enough. You're entitled to them. Making offensive remarks is another matter entirely which is why you got two barrels back. End of story.
