The guy is only 5'9" and 70kg, put that game in a 6'3" 88kg frame and he is top 10. The start of a potential ridiculous thread.
To compete on grass, which he is, he has to be red lining and consistent. The conditioning he requires to compete at that level over 5 sets or at least to win 3 out of five if he is having to manage his knees, is probably a little way off. Bachinger was a good test, powerful, heavy serve that Dan returned well, came at fast at the beginning of the second and really after struggling to get his first serves in there was no way back for Evo.
Isn't that what being professional is about, managing the situation. Psychologically Bachinger went into the third set treading water, as opposed to powering through the remaining games of the second finishing with a ferocious fist pump. But again all much more interesting that speculating an imaginary fine, no criticism of the umpire who was solid, no contentious calls just a cracking game.
Shame there is no fine for lazy journalism (not giving best effort) when it comes to accuracy or relevance.
The story is Dan is back to the sort of form that got him into the world top 150 and playing the type of compulsive tennis that makes you want to watch and support him, there was no lack of effort the place was humming. This in context of his knee injury and now potentially going to five sets; firing up the crowd who were all palpably in his corner; controversial colloquial use of the French verb "to go" with a broad brummajum twist, CD probably had palpitations, now that begins to make a story.
What a waste of ink printing second hand gossip. Anybody going down today is in for a potential treat definitely worth 20p on the door to a dogs charity. Sorry I am indifferent to dogs and even I coughed up. As Paul Weller would say " now that's entertainment "
"Allez!!!" for today as they say in Basall Heath
Actually I though his 'allez' was very passable ! (second syllable short and clipped, no hint of the British diphthong horror)
Possibly something to so with the new (?) French coach guy in his camp ???? Just think, Our Dan, the multi-linguist
And tennis is such a general sport in France, across all classes, that it's great walking around - you hear ERV and other 'top-drawer' players speaking 'very nice' Parisian French, and a lot of others speaking extreme local twang, colloquial, hicksville French. (love it!).
NB Back to British, the quote of the day for me yesterday was:
Elderly guy 1: so there's an awful lot of courts and matches to get played. What do they do if it rains?
Elderly guy 2: well, they try and get them done, they've got an extra day or two.
Elderly guy 1: Yes, but what if it rains ALL week?
Elderly guy 2: Oh, in that case, it's the selectors; they just choose who they think should go through, that's their job.

That Daily Mail article, though probably overblown with regard to his antics, does generate interest in Dan Evans which is a good thing. He speaks his mind well and I reckon it will put a few more bums on seats today for his final match. His tennis does merit a good audience and he responds to that too. If he can rustle up his best tennis, the crowd are in for a treat.
