Maybe he's injured. Playing too many tournaments just now getting Bogged down on the tour.

You don't win sets of tennis 6-1 at professional level injured.

Maybe look at that forehand.

I thought it was possible to get an injury at any point. Silly me

A shame that Aljaz lost, but Mannarino had to be the favourite to win - he is good on grass (just ask Andrew Castle lol!) and it is Bedene's worst surface. Well done for keeping it competitive.

I bet he won't be injured next week - when he collects his £29k!

To be fair you can't blame him. There will be plenty of others in the same boat. Kvitova (although she doesn't need the money) pulled out or Eastborne with a sore throat??? and I'm sure we will get other retirements later in the week as well.

I get more annoyed at the clay court shysters who moan about the grass come and collect their money then disappear back to Italy/Spain/South America having made no impression or little effort. At least we know the Brits will give everything they've got.

I saw that about Kvitova! Did a double take to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me

Hear hear re: the Brits though, every single one of them will be pumped for the grass court season, and come Wimbledon I'm hoping we'll see the 'Big Match' Wardy rather than the one who's been knocking about recently!

Just to add some even more depressing context to James' result I see that Smyczek has just lost 1 and 3 to Vesely.

I just don't know what James should do for the best at the moment. It looks clear to me that he has over played, is in a rut and desperately needs to some time away from the court and to come back physically and mentally refreshed. There are times when a player can play there way out of bad form but this just doesn't feel like one of those times. The problem of course is that straight after Wimbledon there is the Davis Cup tie and then a run of weeks where he defends big points.

I have to agree with many of the comments. £44k pay day over the past 3 weeks and unlikely to win a match. The problem with James once his head drops, that's it. It's pretty clear to me his issues are more psychological, his DC performances prove that, and when his serves fires it's a great weapon.

I think he has to get to winning matches again, and that means playing challys; even them the success in the grass season pretty poor.

The bottom line I think, is that his ranking flatters him at the mo and the correction will be made in the next few weeks,

I'd love him to prove me wrong but I fear he won't.

And he needs to sort his wardrobe out; you've got to be a good player to carry that outfit, not a mediocre one

Why should a player's level determine what he wears?

You had better inform the fashion police...

Don't worry, he'll be in all white at Wimbledon.

Flippin heck, I am much more concerned about James' level of tennis than his wardrobe

( and the idea that you have to be a certain level to be "different" I find rather odd / amusing )

If Wawrinka can win the French in those shorts, I think we can rule fashion out as the issue.

Can see people's points about lack of effort, but I think surely that is something the tour should address. When 3/4 slams are not on clay, if they give clay courters the chance to gain DA through the sheer volume of clay challengers and tournaments, then that is the tours fault for not distributing points differently. Certainly cant expect players to turn down the cash when there are so many in the lower rungs who are frighteningly underpaid.
