RE: Week 25 - WTA Premier $666K - Eastbourne, UK grass

Baptism of fire indeed for Laura.

A "problem" in women's tennis ( although I generally love the tennis scoring system ) is that without strong serves generally and particularly here with Laura's sometimes good serve very rusty, you will get scorelines like that when many of the games may have been very competitive, with just the better player generally taking these as well as some easier ones. Whereas a guy with a strong serve can be generally outplayed yet pick up quite a lot of games with "free points".

She's back playing tennis on tour

Finally some sense in MDWCs dished out to someone who really deserves it, Harriet.

That's the worst result, by scoreline, of Laura's professional career. But I don't think that she should be especially discouraged.

Gavrilova, on current form, is a much better player than any of the opponents of our other women have got in the main draw. Perfectly reasonable chance that Gav will win the main tournament. She was only in qualifying because the acceptance list was done weeks ago - by now her ranking (41) would have seen her make the main draw; and her ranking points total is not even based on a full year's results after a lengthy injury break.

All in all, I think Gav has been the standout emerging talent of the year.

Interesting possibilities for Harriet perhaps, as Domi only started hitting again 2-3 weeks ago, following her surgery.

There would appear to be no Wimbledon Q WCs left to allocate.

So if Laura wants to go that route, then they would have to move someone from a Q WC to a MD WC.

The doubles draw is out, with Smith and Rae getting the lower-ranked Dushevina and Martinez Sanchez. Good opportunity.

I agree with you in all except that Gavrilova is a much better player than Sloane or Cibulkova, both of which have had more success at slam level. Gavrilova is definitely an emerging talent though, having seemingly progressed slower than expected from juniors.

Definitely don't agree with the Gavrilova "much better" player than Sloane and Cibulkova. IMHO, a fit Cibulkova is better (not much better, but better). Sloane can play if/when she decides/wants to. She's got the weapons but is just too passive (defence oriented counter puncher).

Comments from Laura (from the Guardian) following today's match:
In a way I think it was a victory to just finish a match, be back on court, back playing tournaments and for that Im very happy, Robson said. Im not expecting to play my best tennis right now, its going to take a while, its going to take a lot more matches and a lot more practice and Im very, very willing to do that. Im not even at the level I was before I was injured yet so Ive got a long way to go to get there and to then improve.

Tomorrows Centre Court schedule includes R1 matches featuring Naomi Broady, Johanna Konta and Joss & Anna's doubles.

The key for me is that she was 'pain' free, obviously would have loved a more competitive score line. 1st set especially could have been much closer. It seemed to me that once Laura got her 1st game either Gav upped her game or Laura subconsciously took the foot off the gas, as the match then went very quickly. I suspect top 200 by the end of the year would be a good target, with top 50 by the end of next. I'm sure she'd love to qualify for the Olympics, but I just hope she can stay injury free, and at least today she comes through unscathed. They say it takes as long back as she was out to get back to the level she needs to be at, so that's the end of 2016. She seemed really happy so that's a positive sign.

I really applaud Laura for her comments. She's got it spot on and if I might add, start with ITF matches to re-tune and build up. Tennis is an unforgiving sport and waits for no one. You have to work your way back into contention and it will take a considerable amount of time. Since you are aware of that, you will be fine Laura.

Well, the women got 1 point and $750 for the one match, so that's a pretty good day. And Laura D, for one, certainly put up a better score than expected (expected by me, at any rate) so well done to her. And the others, too, of course, and here's to good health to them all !

Over the last 3 weeks I think that most of them have done "better than expected" - given their rankings smile

After Wimbledon they should get back to proper tennis and I generally think it's looking good - should be a good second half  biggrin

I thought Harriet had a QWC?

Given she's not playing today she surely can't play both.

One I missed.

R1: KONTA, Johanna (GBR) WC 139 v DIYAS, Zarina (KAZ) 34 CH=31 12/1/15
