RE: Week 24 - Wimbledon Wilcard Play-offs - Wimbledon, UK - Grass

Judging by twitter conversation, it looks like Em might have got a quals WC

I hope Emily has got the quals wild card - don't understand why she had to go through the play-offs

Agreed; although the extra matchcourt time may hold her in good stead; here's hoping smile

Good.

So kinda worked out with Cav, Tara and Em getting the Q WCs ( though a pity for Lucy that no more were to be had ).

I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the meeting that didn't give Em a Q WC in the first place thus sending her to the play-offs.

Interesting, I was just about to ask whether Emily might get the last remaining QWC, though I thought it might be wishful thinking.
Good to see that she got it.

Glad Tara and Cav made it through too.

Seems a real shame for Lucy but supposedly she was covered from head to toe in bandages yesterday, so carrying a lot of niggles, and if you have to choose between the two semi-finalists (coz that's the way the numbers work out) then Em has to win, based on far superior current ranking and slightly better grass court results.

And there's a huge gap in the women's doubles line-up - four wildcard teams to be nominated.

So one for Tara and Nik Slater, that's got to be a slamdunk....

One for Laura R plus another, if she wants one....

One for Venus and Serena if they want one - they'll need a WC, won't they?

and one for...... not sure..... Marion Bartoli and Kim Clijsters ?

As mentioned in the Robson thread, she's playing doubles with Keys and gets in on her protected ranking.

Interesting contrast between the US and UK approach to deciding these things.

UK= arrange one tiny apology of a tournament, in the fag-end of a week when there are simultaneously 3 other tournaments on the go, by invitation only, the week before the Wimbledon qualies start.

US= 3 months of national competition, open to all, 3 months in advance of the tournament itself.

The US method is clearly better, imho.

Much better. You have to earn your spot. No favouritism/subjectivism, etc. etc.

One slight problem might be that nearly all the Brit girls who might benefit are playing most of their tennis overseas, mainly due to the absence of ranking tournaments in GB. If they had to travel back regularly I think that those chasing rankings wouldn't bother.
