Additionally, there are very frequently walkovers in the WTA events directly preceding a Slam. Harriet could very feasibly win a single match, get a w-o, and collect enough points (+100) to be on the verge of US Open qualies.
An Eastbourne MD WC is worth much more than a 1/8 chance of making it through Wimbledon qualifiers.
Yes, and for those having to hussle and fight for every point and pay cheque, that's fine.
But for someone in Harriet's position (young, funded, and with a long-term career path in view), why mess up your focus by not knowing which tournament you're supposed to be playing ? The coaches try so hard to teach youngsters how to raise their game for important matches, prepare key tournaments etc. and now there's Harriet not really knowing whether she should try and win on Monday or not..... Also, as Phil says, it risks miffing the AELTC (so just throw their gift in their face, why not...). Or risks miffing Eastbourne if she drops out in round 2 (or bombs in round 1 and people say that's because she's not focused and just thinking about Wimbly Qs.). Will also irritate and alienate a lot of other players. It may well turn out fine (hope it does) but I think it's bad scheduling and coaching.

Entries are generally weak for the last men's ATP 250, as the top players prefer to prepare separately, the 100-220 players are generally in qualifying, so what you will find is a lot of GB players making it into the qualifying draw.
I can't remember what the format is for the grand slams (do doubles qualis go with qaulis in general, or the doubles, or a separate thread all together???)so not starting a new thread but the Wimbledon Doubles Qualifiers seems to be out with:
Sean and Walsh playing Brunstrom/Moser
Dave Rice and Brydan playing Kowalczyk/Zelenay
No sign of Marcus or Smethers (but only two WC spots of course)
NB Do they win anything in the Q doubles draw? Points or money?
