I think that Mandy will beat Fran even on grass, though I can see Emily edging out Cav.
I saw Fran play in Glasgow on hard courts and I thought she had improved the grass may suit her Mandy I have seen on grass and without doubt she plays like a clay courter on grass.
Legged it down to Surbiton at the last minute (sorry, stevemcqueen, I'd have been in touch but had no idea I'd be going till the last minute and got stood up and thought, bugger it, I'm taking a tennis sickie today.....)
Really liked the club - nice atmosphere - helpful, friendly, competent officials (not like everywhere I've been) and - importantly - a really good cafeteria place, serving a wide range of fresh, appetising, healthy, tasty meals and snacks (unlike the travesty at the NTC or the Sutton HPC, for instance, which doesn't even do food as you'd know it - how does that work???).
Now question one: why is Lucy Brown not a better ranked player????? She has a super game. So easy on the eye. All in place. If it's all in the head, sort it out Lucy !!!
She did very well to win her first round match, against a very decent Finnish girl (who also gets zero funding from the Finnish federation, I overheard - it's not jsut our ones.)
Tiffany William has an exciting game too - very athletic, powerful, good technique (miles above in the Lisa match). Tried to 'overplay' , I think, against Lucy (who was on form) in FQR. Will graduate (from US college) at the end of the year and is intending to give the pro tour a go, I overheard. So good luck to her !!!!!!!
Realise I'd got Savannah confused with Rebecca Smaller yesterday (impressive, CD.....). Anyway, it was a very good match between her and Jazzamay. Savannah plays some very good tennis, with a distinctive, unusual for the UK, style (spin, big knee bend, great angles). Jazzamay also has a good all-round game - clean shot, fit, uses her weight (and she doesn't have much!) to good effect in her shot. Well done to both.
Also saw Mollie Crouch for the fist time in a couple of years. She's made BIG progress (which is all you can ask really). Still very powerful shots, heavy ball - but now with far better shape on the shot and balance. The score was severe against the Brazilian (who is good and agile) but Mollie was winning points and forcing the other girl to up her game and play well. Mollie's a tall, powerful girl, her game will get better as she gets older. Good luck to her too.
Lots of our other girls around - saw Naomi B practicing, and Em moaning - for a woman who writes such 'zen' tweets, she's been grumpy over something every time I've seen her
99% sure Sam Murray was there too (as in, there was a woman who I am 99% sure was Sam Murray), which is good news.
And Julie Coin, walking past the men's doubles, pointing out to her dad (?), 'look, the guy on the left, that's the little kid brother of Naomi, sweet huh?'....
