And I don't think the draw was lucky; to me, lucky is if you get a w/o, or if you get someone who got through his round before by a w/o, or everybody is ranked really low.
Alex beat Schott who beat the third seed (WR 311 !!!), and the Russian guy, who beat the sixth seed (ranked 746!). Those are pretty good rankings ....
To be fair when you play UNR, UNR and WR 1987 it is hard to deny that you have had a bit of luck with the draw. However you have to assume that a guy who has beat and a seed and got to the SF is playing okay. More importantly Alex has taken advantage of the opportunity and it should allow him to get in to quite a few main draws now.
Yes, I'd say that there is generally an element of things going your way when your prospective opponent from decent ranked vs unranked turns out to be the unranked player. When lower ranked or unranked players make it through in your bracket it is generally to be welcomed though clearly you get "ringers" at times.
Your strongest possible opposition would very likely be that ranked player playing near his best, and you have avoided that. The unranked / lowly ranked player who has won one or two matches against the ranked player is as RJA says clearly playing reasonably well, ( just by the the simple result the better player this week in the orevious round(s) ), but is very unlikely to have as dangerous a top level. and is likely to be less consistent from match to match.
All the best to Alex. I recall folk who have seen him in the past saying he has quite a spirit about him. I had expected him to make it at least say into the top 1000 well before now. But I have no idea of what issues he has maybe faced.

Take your point, RJA, but I still wouldn't call it a lucky draw. Laura D had a couple of 'lucky' draws last year (walkovers, unranked players who had beaten nobody etc.)
But it's only splitting hairs - as you say, the draw could obviously be harder (and/or easier), but it's great, quite simply, that Alex has won his matches, whatever the circumstances....
