A game of 2 halves, although I do agree with Paul that Katy didn't play a bad match. To me there were 3 differences to this time last year. 1. No cheap points on 1st serve ( down a few mph) 2. Down a little on confidence 3. Her opponent was very focused and intense and was determined to make life very tough for Katy. Still I haven't lost my confidence that Katy will have a very decent senior career. Her ball striking abilities have not left her. That was a killer of a point when Govortsova had slipped and Katy hadn't noticed, pushing her backhand long.
All I missed of Jo's match was 1 game. It feels as if Jo's game is evolving. Her serve was solid, but I've seen it better (although it was windy and cold ). Her forehand is much improved from the last time I saw it at the FedCup, and it looks a more solid shot, a bit better technically. Her backhand was very solid as well. The biggest area of improvement I noted was her mid court to net play. She played some exquisite angled volleys and some delicate drop shots. She also was able to cope very easily with MR's slices, which there were plenty of. Interestingly during her post match interview she made special mention of the fact that she had been injury free for 6 months, and that is clearly enabling her to get back to playing solid top 100 tennis. Very positive.
In a separate note the attendance's so far have been very disappointing. The ticket prices are probably too high, but they wanted to keep the prices at the same level as they're for the Men's. It's also £10 to park your car in the official car park, very steep. Crowds are expected to pickup for the semis and finals.
