Week 23 - Mozambique F2 ($10,000) - Maputo (Hard)

Words got out that Mozambique ain't that hard - got a full, ranked, main draw draw-sheet this week. So our lads are in the qualis:

QR1:  Jay Clarke v TROLLIP, Reinhardt  (RSA) UNR

QR1: Curtis Clarke v FIGUEIREDO, Bruno (MOZ) UNR age 36

QR1: Jack Oswald v (wc) MAPOSSE, Calvin (MOZ) age 16

Two more wins:

QR1: Curtis Clarke def. FIGUEIREDO, Bruno (MOZ) UNR age 36 6-0 6-2

QR1: Jay Clarke v TROLLIP, Reinhardt (RSA) UNR 7-6(4) 6-0

Worth noting that the guy that Curtis came within a whisker of beating last week, has gone on and beaten the top seed and made the final. So I'm hoping fro a good run from Curtis.

FQR: Jay Clarke v Luis Crocco (ARG) UNR age 17

FQR: Curtis Clarke v Carlos Capel (ESP) UNR (CH 1894 Jan 14)

FQR: jack Oswald v Anderson Reed (USA) UNR

Both Clarke boys through to the main draw

FQR: Jay Clarke def. Luis Crocco (ARG) UNR age 17 6-1 6-0

FQR: Curtis Clarke def. Carlos Capel (ESP) UNR (CH 1894 Jan 14) 6-3 6-3

FQR: jack Oswald lost to Anderson Reed (USA) UNR 6-2 6-3

And both get fellow Qs in the first round

R1: (Q) Jay Clarke v (Q) Stefan Vujic (AUS) UNR age 17

R1: (Q) Curtis Clarke v (Q) Anderson Reed (USA) UNR

And both playing in the doubles together this week, with a WC, but get the second seeds. Jack, too, with a play.

Could Curtis add to his solitary point and Jay find his first? Very kind draws there for the Brothers Clarke. Good luck lads!

R1:  William Bushamuka (USA/COD (*)) & Jack Oswald UNR vs Matías Franco Descotte & Lloyd [George!] Harris (ARG/RSA) UNR
R1:  (WC) Curtis Clarke & Jay Clarke UNR vs (2) Duncan Mugabe & Hassan Ndayishimiye (UGA/BDI) CR 2253 (1402+851)  bleh

(*) There seems to be some confusion about Bushamuka's nationality:  the ITF says he's a Yank, while the ATP has him as Democratic Republic of Congo!

Bushamuka intrigued me, too, SC, so I Googled a bit. I think, trying to put together the disparate bits of information, that he is from the DRC ... trained for a while at the ITF centre in Senegal (did others know that the ITF had a centre in Senegal? I certainly didn't) ... and then came to the US, where he appears to have found sponsors who helped him market himself to US universities. He's now playing for the University of Kentucky, I think. Bios put together in this fashion are distinctly dodgy, so I don't know how accurate any of that is, but one can see where confusion amongst the various bodies could arise.

Does look as if there's a strategy of trying to get promising young players from sub-Saharan Africa to the US for university - interesting.

Just for the record:

L32:  (Q) Curtis Clarke UNR defeated (Q) Anderson Reed (USA) UNR by 6-1 6-7(4) 7-6(2)

Looks like a bit of a battle!

Curtis was serving at *4-2 in the second, so definitely could have been over a lot more quickly than it was! Good lad for hanging on for the win.
