Week 22 - Challenger (€42,500) - Aegon Manchester Trophy, Manchester (grass) - doubles

Separate thread, as usual, as there are so many Brits in the draw - & another new partner for Colin!

R1:  Fabrice Martin & Purav Raja (FRA/IND) CR 218 (107+111) vs (WC) Scott Clayton & Richard Gabb CR 636 (307+329)
R1:  (4) Colin Fleming & John-Patrick Smith (AUS) CR 182 (82+100) vs Alex Bolt & Luke Saville CR 615 (172+443)
R1:  Ken Skupski & Neal Skupski CR 293 (147+146) vs Matt Ebden (AUS) & James Ward UNR (*)  bleh
R1:  (WC) Ed Corrie & Dan Smethurst CR 568 (224+344) vs Sean Thornley & Darren Walsh CR 338 (179+159)   bleh
R1:  Brydan Klein & Divij Sharan (IND) CR 293 (167+126) vs (WC) Luke Bambridge & Liam Broady CR 550 (273+277)  cry

(*) Ebden's current ranking is 237, while James currently hasn't one, although his CH is 233 (August 2011)

Perhaps being back on the green stuff will give the Skupskis' confidence a bit of a boost ( ).  Pity Dino will be on the other side of the net in the first round, though.  hmm

The top seeds are Raven Klaasen & Rajeev Ram...  No sign of Dave Rice, though. confuse

Dave Rice was playing French league tennis on Sunday so obviously couldn't make the qualis for the singles.

Doesn't mean he couldn't have come just for the doubles though . . . unless sign in for the doubles was on Sunday ?

Just for the record Coup Droit the doubles sign in was deadline was 12.00 on monday.

I'm pleased to see Daniel and Ed teamed up again. Up until Wimbledon 2014 they had a very successful partnership but have hardly played together since. Bearing in mind that Ed is unlikely to make singles pay alone and possibly Dan will not either they need to stick to this partnership wherever they can, this is how they will earn money on tour. I fear another early defeat for Darren and Sean though.

It'll be interesting to see how Scott and Richard progress after performing well on the futures circuit.

Hopefully we'll see the Brit's dominate this tournament.

What's the latest with Marray?

Agreed. Much needed.

Yes. Nothing against Dino. But when it comes to doubles, I would always support the specialists over the singles players "having a go".

Really hoping that the grass court stretch can help Ken and Neal kick start their season.

Random question. Are there Wimbledon main draw wild cards on offer for the the winners of each of the 3 pre Wimbledon challengers?

I agree and would like to see it but, I remember other posters on here suggesting this partnership a year ago and get laughed at!

Nice win for the LBs (adopting CD's phrasing) against quite good opposition. Can't help feeling this pairing has lots of potential.

On the evidence of this match, it would seem that Ed & Dan have managed to rekindle their reasonably successful partnership, but I feel so sorry for Sean & Darren.  I hope, however, that they will persevere for a while longer to see whether they can make it work.

Liam Broady+ v Neal Skupski+

The prize - to win Naomi Broady as a mixed doubles partner in 4 weeks' time?

(This is my silly suggestion;) nothing else).
