Why couldn't they implement a compromise, something along the lines of a MTB at 10-10 or 12-12 in the final set. Keeps the battle of attrition and excitement for fans, without it becoming ridiculous and exhausting for the players. Seems like there's a unexplored middle ground here that could work much better than the current scenario.
Ps well done Kyle, one more win and I'd make him a favourite to compete at all 4 GS this year.
I am hoping that tomorrow will be the last time Kyle has to play a qualifier for a Slam. He is clearly a dead cert for a WC at Wimbledon, and hopefully by US Open he will be getting directly into the MD.
It seems that Liam's "choke" was contagious. Radu Albot lost today against (wc)Calvin Hemery WR 447. Albot served for the match in the second and was broken from 30-0 and then proceeded to lose the tie break from 6-1 up.
I had to tear myself away from the live scores to go to an external meeting, but the die seemed pretty well cast in both Kyle's match & JoKo's, so in that sense, their results were no great surprise. Was thrilled, however, to get home & find that things hadn't gone pear-shaped in my absence. Well done to both.
Yes, Spaced, the 10-10 or 12-12 final TB would certainly be a compromise instead of these occasional ridiculous ones where both players give it their all, but the winner is 'punished' for taking so long to break service.
Let's have a more sensible scoring system like that so that you can never reach 15-15 in games or much much more.
Just personally for me I prefer the symmetry of all sets being on the same basis. But if I was purely concerned re length something like a 10-10 final set TB would be good.

wow i saw albot was cruising and cursed the fact it wasn't liam - didn't think to check the final score!
anyway a good experience from Liam, he's come a long way in the last year, and hopefully he'll go places on grass
It might be worth mentioning, although hopefully it won't be a factor, but there will be at least three LL spots in the main draw. Raonic, Tipsarevic and Benneteau have all withdrawn.

If they'd have done that a day or so earlier, Ed would have had his place in the qualies . .
Very few seeds left, I count only 3 seeded higher than kyle (plus his opponent)- quite amazing really. So may well be in line for a LL spot if he loses- but hope it won't come to that!
Not a lot to report today as by the time I arrived Brydan had already lost. Not really shocked as his opponent today was a big step up from the one he beat in the first round.
Saw the end of Kyle's match from 3-2 in the 2nd set and he was playing superbly. Any time he got the ball on his forehand inside the court the point was over. He was so impressive that when Hanescu was walking to the net to shake his hand he was applauding him on his racquet. As Bob says playing like he did today I would be shocked to see him playing grand slam qualies again for a long time.
The only mistake he made was when 30-40 up at 4-2 he returned serve and just stood still as if he thought the serve was out when it was on the line. It didn't make any difference as he won the next 2 points anyway. Tomorrow I will definitely watch all of Kyle's match rather than only a few games.
Also count me in as someone who loves the long final sets. I remember watching Nicolas Mahut beat Alex Bogdanovic 24-22 in the final set in the 2nd round of wimbledon qualies and then a few days later he lost 70-68 in the fifth.

Thanks LTR, great to hear how impressive Kyle was looking.
I have been wanting James to have the 'honour' of being the next Brit into the top 100, but Kyle, if you are soon to get there ( and get there you clearly will ) I will be delighted.
That's down the line, and if to be achieved here would probably mean winning two main draw matches. Let's be qualifying for now.
I think a fair amount of scattering of qualifying seeds is to be expected. There actually isn't that big a difference in general standard ( similar to how I am pretty sure many more seeds fall early in challengers compared to main tour and futures ), plus being on clay probably mixes things up even more, certainly as against hard.
I don't know what the sort of normal qualifying seed attrition rate here is, I presume not quite as much as seems to be the case this year.
