RE: Week 20 French Open Qualifying

James has in general certainly lost the consistency he had seemingly found in the second half of last year.

He has for a long time had a pretty decent top level, but was very inconsistent. He found consistency last year and the regular accumulation of points propelled his ranking upwards.

He has lost that consistency again this year, only sparkling on occasion, and we can ( and do ) speculate as to the reasons why.

Tweet from Piers Newberry, who appears to be courtside.

Edmund take the first set against Hanescu 6-1 in 31mins, absolutely crushing his forehand. "C'est pas un match," says one departing local.

Kyle seals a 6-1 6-2 win. That sounds like quite some performance against an ex Top 30 player.

That's fantastic. Guaranteed to be a difficult match in the FQR against Samper-Montana or Menendez-Maceiras.

I shall confess that I was a little worried about this match given Kyle's slightly underwhelming form on clay this season but that is a quite superb result.

For those (like me) who think there should be final set TBs in qualies, I didn't spot that PHH v Arnaboldi was stopped last night at 15-15 (that's games btw) in the 3rd set. Crazy.

Arnaboldi finally won 27-25 in the decider.

A quick word in passing for poor P-H Herbert, who has just lost 27-25 in the third !!!!!!!!

But none of that nonsense from Kyle - positively made mincemeat of the guy

Bob beat me to it . . . smile

A compromise could be no final set TB in the FQR only, which would make it fairer in situations like this.

Seriously impressive by Kyle, losing only 3 games against a wily old vet with pedigree, is impressive in anyones book.
