Sigh. Being a fan of Mr Ward is not always for the faint of heart. I really thought he would win that one. Ah well, tomorrow is another day. Bring on the grass season!
As far as I can see I haven't. Reiterating a point and similarity regarding the barrier of the top 100 which I doubt will ever be broken.
James still has an excellent chance of breaking the top 100 barrier over the next 2 months as presumably he will play the Manchester and Surbiton challengers followed by Queen's, Nottingham and Wimbledon and probably a Davis Cup match after that. As has been pointed out he then has a lot of points to defend so I think there is good chance that he will make the top 100 but then fall back out pretty quickly.
Sad set of results. My belief that James will ever be top 100 standard has currently evaporated. It looks to be a mental barrier rather than the capability of his game. Would be happy to see him establish himself in there and stuff my words down my throat.
I wonder whether these tailing off performances hint that Wardy really still isn't over his knee problem. Playing back to back days and then going into a 3rd set with a scoreline such as this, may indicate a lingering problem. Hopefully not and Wardy can have a great grass court season.
I don't know what Bogdanovic's character was like but if anything, James probably cares too much and is too conscious of breaking the 100 barrier. At least, that is the impression i got from a fairly recent interview, where he mentioned frequently thinking about and calculating the points for rounds in tournaments he was in or were upcoming. That level of awareness and pressure probably does his chances more harm than good. If he could find a way to liberate himself from those thoughts and mentally take himself somewhere else during matches and tournaments, i reckon it would make a big difference for him. More of those key moments in matches would start going his way.
Have been watching the qualies the last couple of days and so thought I'd give a few thoughts.
Only saw the final set of James' match on Monday and he obviously didn't lose a game so seemed to be playing fairly well but today I didn't think he played well at all. He looked much the better tennis player and when he won the first set and got an early break up in the second it looked like a comfortable win. But both times he went a break up in the second set he gifted it straight back. I never thought he would lose until he lost the second set and from then on he never looked like winning, making a lot of poor errors and also just being very passive a lot of the time. He really didn't look like he was enjoying himself and it was hard to begrudge Lindell (who I had never heard of either) his win as he fought very hard and was absolutely thrilled when he won.
Was gutted for Liam as he played very well and was so close. One minute he was serving for the match up 40-15 and then he lost 9 points in a row to be down 5 love in the tiebreak. The first match point was his only major error when he double faulted, it looked like going for a big second serve, the second match point Albot hit a cross court winner .After that maybe Liam got a little passive and let Albot dictate to get the break back, but really it was just a very close match with lots of very long rallys and few cheap points.
The final set was a lot closer than the score suggests, but Albot just played very well on the break points he faced. Overall I thought it was quite encouraging for Liam, if you made a video of the best points/shots of the match nearly all of them would be Liam's, he just needs to try to improve his consistency and he could go a long way.
Didn't expect a lot from Brydan and wasn't really bothered about watching his match but went on his court so I could look over the back and watch a match that was 9all in the third and keep an eye Kyle's court one over from that. By the time that match ended Brydan was 4 love down and I thought I'll watch another 15 minutes or so and then Kyle should be on. Two hours later I was still watching it. I was very impressed with Klein, he looked like a different player from the guy Dan Evans destroyed in Nottingham a couple of years ago. The only time I had seen him play before. From 4-0 down he was comfortably the better player and he was really hurting Bourgue with the dropshot.
From midway through the final set Bourgue started serving better and it looked like he was going to win to the delight of the by now quite noisy crowd. ,Bourgue broke but fell apart when serving for the match and gifted it back and then Brydan had a few tough service games where he had to pull out some very good winners on big points to stay ahead before he broke to win. I was pleased for him as he was the better player for most of the match and seems to have improved a lot recently.
Saw a bit of Kyle while watching Brydan and it seemed to be swinging one way then the other. Melzer really does attack the ball looking to hammer nearly every shot. Saw the last few games up close including a very long rally when Kyle saved break back point with a winner right on the line after which Melzer seemed amazed at what had happened. A very good win I thought and Kyle really does look a class act at times.
