RE: Week 20 - ITF ($10K) - Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt - Hard

Comfortable win for Naomi, and Fran overcame her first set blues biggrin

Laura 1 set up.

Judging from the tweets the potential heat might cause some to think again!

If she has withdrawn im confused. Went to Senegal for 1 week no other tournaments for a few weeks and out to Sharm for one. Id be trying to get my money's worth and easy ranking points to help with placement in the draws for grass court. However the conditions I accept may not be ideal perhaps why fitness is a question hence why Marcus struggled.

Do we think Cav will get some wildcards during the grass season and if so, where? Perhaps a Wimby Q WC?

 1 or 2 in the $50Ks and a Wimby Q.

I have a feeling Katy Dunne and Harriet will get qualifying wild cards based on rankings and that the rest Naomi and Emily etc will have to use the play offs. Doesn't look like we ll see Katie Boulter as she has again withdrawn from Eastboune now.

Laura D has won 6-3, 6-4, and is through to face Naomi in the QF.

I agree Jaggy, that Naomi's schedule is a bit peculiar. I personally think that DanielleK's strategy of roosting in Sharm semi-permanently is eminently sensible. If Naomi is flying in, staying a week, and flying out, she needs to make the final to turn a small profit.

Perhaps more important though, is that she, Tara and Harriet are competing for the Brit No7 ranking, ahead of the grass season. All three are currently in a frustrating position, where the points on offer for winning at 10k level don't help much; there are very few 15ks to choose from; and the 25k women compete for quadruple the points every week. But only one in 4, or sometimes one in 8, comes through 25k qualifying...

The 3 UK 50kITFs, 3WTAs and the other one are all hugely important.

I wander if Naomi asked for a main draw wildcard for Eastbourne 50K and entered Sharm on this basis and due to the high level entry has been turned down and will have to travel back early for qualifying instead?

Yes, that could be it.

To add insult to injury, there are 22 DAs at Eastbourne, so I think there will be only 2 MDWCs? Presumably to NaomiB and KatyD, leaving all the rest as unseeded qualifiers.

A title here would take Cav into the 350s makes WC decisions difficult with 6 or 7 players within 100 or so ranking positions.

I know it's easy with 20-20 hindsight, and it might have happened anyway, but many of us were sceptical about the LTA taking the girls off to the States for that 'training-block-where-you-play-tournaments-too' block at the start of the year.

The results were poor, Katy D has hardly been on a flyer since and Katie B injured herself there and hasn't played a match since.

That's a good point well spotted there if he got to semis next week which she almost certainly would based on entry list she wouldn't make sign in for qualies. Naomi B and Katy are logically the only fair picks for WCs being both close to main draw and highest ranked.

That is interesting I was thinking that earlier. Some of them barely got a close season almost none of them got any points and Katie hasn't played since. I'd be fairly confident Katie would be top 300 now had she not got injured.

jaggy, I know we have had discussions about Emily and I have acknowledged that she does look overranked as against her results.

( By the way I some time later noticed you in a post subsequent to that acknowledgement seeming to take umbrage that I hadn't mentioned you by name as who I had wrongly doubted before I had looked at her results in detail and had not apologised to. No idea how serious you were, but covering all bases I hereby apologise for in good faith thinking differently to yourself, being wrong and not making it all very clear )

Anyway, Emily yes, I would still personally be pretty surprised if she doesn't get a Wimbledon.Q WC without recourse to the Q WC play-offs.

Thank you kind sir a gent.

Anyway I'm assuming LTA criteria will base WCs on younger players hence Katy and Harriet and sadly the old timers like Emily and Cav use the play offs. That's what they seem to be suggesting but the goals posts or maybe net posts seem to move depending how much Brandy they've been on. The thing is though I think at the moment ability wise they are pretty much the same from Katy Emily Harriet and Cav especially based on current form.
