Week 19 - ATP Masters 1000 (Internazionali BNL d'Italia) - Rome (red clay)

L64:  (3) Andy Murray WR 3 vs BYE

Andy will play either Jérémy Chardy or, would you believe, Lukas Rosol in the second round.  Unfortunately, he's in the same half of the draw as NoDjo.  hmm

L32:  (3) Andy Murray WR 3 vs Jérémy Chardy (FRA) WR 38 (CH = 25 in January 2013)

The head-to-head is 5-1 in Andy's favour, all matches played on hard courts.

I did hear last night on the radio that Andy was travelling to Rome, but with his accumulated matches over the last two weeks he wasn't certain to play.

Good news :)
Here's hoping he can continue to close the gap on that world #2 ranking...

I would be surprised if he goes deep however. Very much get the feeling that his main focus this week will be on match practice at sea level, as he's reiterated quite a few times, and less so on picking up big points or the title. Not that I think he would tank, but as we've seen many times in the past I just wouldn't expect him to go 110% to turn a match around if he's struggling.

And Andy adds to my knowledge ...

I knew that Madrid ( 646 metres, 2119 feet ) was well above sea level, but not Munich ( 519 metres, 1703 feet ).

Oh dear someone as sad as me - I had just looked that up as well!!

However how much difference does it make? I have never heard of any football teams having to adjust to the "altitude" of playing at Munich or Madrid (Barcelona seem to be coping quite well as I speak). Johannesburg, Mexico City, Denver OK but they all at 1500m +

Andy won 6-4 6-3. I missed it all as I had an appointment, so will have to watch the match later - probably in two sessions, as I have to go out again at about 2.45.

QF:  (3) Andy Murray WR 3 vs David Goffin (BEL) WR 20 (= CH)

Andy has played him once, in the first round of Wimbledon last year, & beat him by 1, 4 & 5.  Goffin has just dumped out JWT in three.

It was quite a tussle, Goffin had to save a few match points.
