I think Kyle saw the serve as out. From what I saw, I would think that the umpire was saying that Kyle left his "challenge" too late and so he couldn't come down and look at the mark.
Missed the start of the match. Seems to be very serve dominated. Kyle only lost 5 points on serve in 5 games, but still managed to get broken early on. Never really got a look in on the Starace serve though.
Drat. Missed both matches as I had to go out then sort out a problem with tennistv, which took ages. Well done Aljaz, hard lines Kyle, Starace did look a bit of a banana skin.
Did anyone hear what Kyle was saying to the umpire there?
No, but I read it like this. Earlier in the set, the umpire refused Kyle's request to come down and look at the mark saying that Kyle had already played his shot. On this occasion, Starace had put his shot out and yet the umpire went down anyway to look at the mark from Kyle's preceding shot and called it out. I would guess Kyle was complaining about inconsistency.
Of course, we don't know at what moment Starace called "out". He may have done it immediately, but we don't know.
Shame for Kyle. That's 3 QFs in 3 weeks. Solid return over this stretch but I am sure he would have hoped to go further on at least one of those occasions. Let's see how he does in Masters Qualies next week.
Agh, I understand Kyles frustration with the call, what's not clear to me is had the umpire called it out, or did starace question it and then signal it out only for the umpire to give him the point. Kyle seemed to be dominant in most aspects of his game but was out manoeuvred by an old pro who has made a more than decent career on the dirt. There must be so many lessons to learn from this performance I can't say I am too disheartened by this loss.
