L16: (Q) Josh Paris UNR def. (5) Tal Goldengoren (ISR) WR 597 (CH = 596 last month) 6-4 7-6(3)
And, yes, RJA, I know we talked at length about Josh on this forum about two years ago (it must be now). Lovely tennis. A lot of promise. I thought he was a slam-dunk for US college (bright lad, switched-on father). But seemingly not. But don't know what he's doing instead. Anyway, fantastic win
Is that a first ranking point for Josh or has he been on the ranking boards before?
He got up to WR 1500 (or so) as a 17 year-old (or so) but then seemed to disappear off the radar for a time (as above, I though he'd gone off to uni - in fact he might well have done. But don't know. His name used to come up in the local north london newspaper a bit but haven't seen it for a while).

He was ranked 1,513th in January last year. The ATP has him as "inactive"!

Glad I was pretty much spot on, SC - thank you.
Gone searching and I see that Josh played a money tournament in France in April (and lost in the first round).
Also played a couple last summer, in July and August (also without much success). Probably summer holiday stuff (down near Nice). Doesn't belong to a club - has a foreigner's 'admin' ranking - so is obviously not based there.

Last week, Toby went out 2&4 to Karlovskiy, in the QF. But Karlovskiy then went on to beat Sam Barry 2&1 in the SF. So I am expecting a close match between Sam and Toby.
Interestingly, I was expecting to winner of Sam and Toby to meet Karlovskiy again in the semi this week but he has just been beaten by Frenchman Hugo Grenier in R2. The only other seed left in the top half is Dekel Bar, who Sam beat comfortably in straight sets last week. So perhaps a really good chance for either Toby or Sam to make a final here. Sorry to my Irish friends, but I will be cheering for Toby.
Josh's opponent, as well has having a CH ranking of 161 as per SCs post above, but he also won last weeks tournament without dropping a set or even being taken beyond 4 in any particular set. It will be very tough for Josh.
really means alot that you guys speak highly of josh
quite update (hes my brother FYI)
he moved, approx 6 months ago, to barca (opting to pursue the dream, instead of, most likely, having too much fun at college in the states!)
the reason he went MIA is our father past away (approx 2 and a half years ago)
hes coming back stronegr than ever, given such a terrible thing to happen to him as such a tender age, hes become a serious and determined young man and i have real high hopes for him
just wanted to say keep supporting him and look out him, i hope, as im sure you all do, that he can become a real british success
Really great to have you on the board. Always good to have an "informant" with inside information LOL. Thank you also for sharing the very personal information about your father. It is a traumatic experience for anyone, but the younger you are, the more difficult it is. My (very) belated condolences to you both.
To be honest, I did not know of Josh until a couple of weeks ago, but his performances during this last couple of weeks have brought him to my attention, and I am sure others on the board here may say the same. I certainly look forward to supporting him in the future as he moves up the ladder.
Interesting for me of course is that he is now based over here in Spain. Does he like the clay ? If he is going to play futures here in Spain, and I am hoping he does, then whenever possible, I will try and get along to support, providing it isn't too far to travel. (If you've been looking at the board for a while, you will no that I am not averse to a bit of traveling LOL).
Anyway, stick around and give us some more insight when you can. We will all appreciate it, I'm sure.
Is he on Twitter ?
