I do see the point about Marcus's current ranking.
But to my mind Marcus should most certainly be playing more than the 'occasional' challenger qualies.
and that includes abroad - even quite a bit abroad.
This to my should apply more to Marcus compared to players in general around his ranking, because he does have the ability to get himself much higher ranked. And very relevantly he has previously shown a liking for and an aptitude for performing on the bigger stage and garnered some good results and points.
I find this longterm conservatism re tournament entry really rather strange.
Marcus has the extra funding, and the talent, and is of an age, to stop faffing around in futures (apart from a few here and there for special reasons) and get down to business.
And Marcus legs it up to the Aveyron (middle of nowhere, south-west France) and gets the singles win, and the doubles, and takes the team to victory 4-2 !!!!

Interesting and helpful write-ups, Bob; much appreciated.
Maybe Willis needs someone close at hand doing the pushing; weight loss targets, tournament levels and so on. Some players respond to that, to move them beyond a comfort level.
Apologies if I've missed this or there's an obvious answer, but why is he choosing to continue with Futures - is the prize money a factor? I'm struggling to understand the strategy.
I think from talking to Marcus, that there are two main reasons at the moment. His back is definitely still an issue and I think he wants that to be 100% before he moves back up to Challengers. As someone who has suffered from 30 years of back trouble and tried everything from traction to epidurals, I have a certain sympathy with what he is going through. It appears to be nothing more than an annoying niggle, but one that just won't go away. I have actually given him the details of a physio in London who did more good for me in two sessions than all the other docs and physios put together over the years.
The other factor is clearly financial. As I said previously, he is very grateful of Gary's support and speaks very highly of him, but this financial support is not the panacea to all the financial stresses that a tennis player may have. Here is his thinking in two weeks time. Does he:
a) Go to Turkey for the Challenger. It is not a +H, so that means expenses. With his current ranking, he will have to play 2 or 3 rounds of qualies, but will get nothing unless he makes the main draw. Then, to win say 1200 euros, he will have to go on to make the QFs or more.
or
b) Play French League where he gets 1200 euros just for turning up and as CD says, he probably gets traveling expenses too. But if he does this, he is not available for the Challenger Qualies as he couldn't get to Turkey until Sunday night at the earliest. So he would opt to play Futures, where he is likely to be highly seeded and with a good chance to earn more money - albeit not very much.
From what I gather, he hasn't yet made his mind up. It really is a dilemma for players around his ranking with the ambition to move up. It is just a shame that the LTA deem him to be TOO OLD and refuse to help. His recent work ethic and loss in weight suggest to me that he is as committed as ever to making a career from tennis.

Bob the Bag Man. I could live with that. I can think of worse ways to spend a life than following Marcus and others around the world to watch them play tennis. Might even have time to write a few more match reports while I'm at it
Some of the points are not exactly as I remember them but the editor has done a good job. Should be noted, that he emailed me to say there were no highlights of the 1st set as nobody had told him that the final had been moved forwards by a couple of hours. Good job Marcus didn't win 2&1 or something similar otherwise there would have been no highlights at all.
