More at stake than usual in a Challengers match here. The US offers its main draw WC at RG to the person who gains the most points over their clay Challengers. Leader at present is Frances Tiafoe, who also just beat the number one seed in Tallahassee, so still gaining points. Bjorn Fratangelo, who is good on clay (won RG Juniors) is second behind him.
Poor game from Liam with 3 UEs and he is 5-6* down. Pity, because at 0-15 in that game, we saw the point of the match from Liam with an unbelievable short angled backhand winner.
In the 2nd set, Liam had 4 BPs in one game early on to go 2-0 up but couldn't convert. He got broken in the next game and after that was playing catchup.
Fratangelo is another one of those players who had a good junior career but struggled with the transition. He has however been in pretty good form this year and so was pretty solid favourite today.
I also thought Fratangelo was a high quality opponent, and it would probably take something a bit special from Liam to notch a win here, pleased to hear he gave a good account of himself and can head into future tournaments with a reasonable level of confidence.
Overall, the quality of the match was good. Liam missed too many returns on second balls in the second set. I think that Liam will put together a winning seires of results soon.
