James had seemingly such a big window during the first half of the year to make the top 100 that I was very confident that it would come, now not so ...
Just watched Machado finish off Marti, and on today's showing he starts as heavy favourite against James tomorrow.
My sentiments exactly, sadly, given Machado's recent performances at Futures level. That said, the Slovak, Patrik Fabian (WR 773), did for him by 2 & 1 in the Doha QFs earlier in the week, though (forgive me for being cynical here) his mind could well have been more focused on the Barcelona qualies... If Dino's not fully fit, he has no chance.
OK. James was very rusty today. He always had too much for his young but talented opponent, and when he stepped up the pace, most notably at the start of the 2nd and 3rd sets, the young spaniard simply couldn't cope. But for much of the rest of the time, James was very cautious as he simply tried to keep the ball in play and this allowed his opponent to play his own game.
Perhaps this was a symptom of his laboured movement today. As I mentioned earlier, there were signs of a limp between points which leads me to worry about his fitness.
It may also have been a case today of it being his first match on clay since th FO last year and he may be just easing himself in to the clay season. I really hope am wrong about the knee, but I have this nagging vision in my mind of James retiring tomorrow.
