Yep, Jo's form has been a little patchy since last summer so stepping down to 25ks in America where she now trains (???) makes sense. Get some matches in then head back to Europe for RG qualies. This weeks field is weaker than usual due to Charleston, and the 50k in Colombia (and the 4 other 25ks), but next weeks is a fair bit tougher and should give her more matches against top 250 players.
She could have played the qualies for Charleston but she would have only been seeded to win one match then lose in the FQR (which of course she could have won), so maybe she wanted to ease into the clay season and rebuild some confidence.
I think this was good scheduling. Jo hasn't won many matches this year and has fallen down the rankings. This is a good week to get some matches and build the confidence again.
If she has a good series of results over the next few weeks, her ranking will stabilise and she will be more confident going back to bigger events in Europe.
You can't always play big events constantly. You need to mix things up to win matches and gain confidence.
Hopefully this week will do Jo good. I don't think anyone has been suggesting that she's been in generally great form, so getting in 5 matches this week, particularly the last two competitive ones, shouldn't do her any harm.
