I strongly suspect she is heading to Japan - in which case flying to India for one event, then home, then back out to the Far East, seems a bit odd, when she could have competed in Barnstaple and trained at home before making the trip.
But hey, not for me to second guess. Just hope she recovers from her heat stroke and is all ok.
It may have been an entry error as she never withdrew from Barnstaple, but ended up in India as it was a higher preference.
And perhaps she is not interested in having a 'clay court swing'. Her game is far more suited to hard and grass so perhaps she wants to stick on hard and get enough points in the bag to aim for entry into events in the new extended grass season.
If you're going to be a top 100 player, and I 100% believe Katy can be /will be, you can't avoid the clay on tour, also think it's massively beneficial for the development of your game. Laura/Hev/JoKo never avoided the clay and they are our top players.
Clay is vital for long term development especially for aggressive/attack oriented players who are comfortable and/or prefer hard/grass courts. It gives time on the ball to develop proper technique and tactics - essential ingredients for such players.
Yes, I agree with what you all say about clay and Katy has not shied away from it in the past, having played over 20 junior ITF events on the surface. However, she did play particularly well on the grass last year and I wondered whether this year she might be planning her schedule to focus on that; skip the clay, stay on hard where she'll pick up most points and be better prepared for the surface than if she'd played a clay stretch. Not saying that is what she's doing but it's what I'd be tempted to do in her shoes, you know, home events, lots of prestige, potential for big points and matches against the big girls. I'd make it my focus and build my schedule towards it.
