RE: Week 14 - ITF ($25K) - Ahmedabad, India Hard

A single point in it. Jeezo, I need a lie down.

She'll be absolutely goosed for her match against Hsu tomorrow (who is on an 11 match winning streak) but again, in the context of her year and all the tight matches she's been on the wrong end of, that was a big win.

The Japanesenplayer did the same in the first set. Got stronger as the set progressed.

Come on Katy

Harriets singles, and Emily's doubles, will be televised tomorrow. Presumably on DD Sports.

Looks like Katy couldn't handle the very tough conditions. Hampered by heat stroke. Did amazingly well in the second set all things considered

Well done Em and Harriet, hard luck Katy. Katy's scheduling has been very strange this year, this is the 3rd time she has made the trip to India just in the last 3.5 months. I'm not sure it makes much sense for a young developing player to do so. If it's about chasing cheap ranking points ( a real pet hate of mine ) it makes even less sense. Fair enough playing over Christmas worked well for her, but even Em had that week off. Then this year on her 1st visit out here, she played a hard court event then one on 'clay' the week after. This current visit only includes one tournament and then she has no entries anywhere for the next 2 weeks. Why not play Barnstaple ? I'd have thought much nicer playing a home event, or even better still head out to the states and play the clay court swing, as its now the clay court season anyway. If the main reason for playing here is to chase cheap ranking points, you may get a short term gain, but the chances are it will backfire in the future. Being say the 250ith ranked player in the world is great but only if you've earned those points. You're only heading for a fall, as eventually you will have to play the stronger strength events and you will be out of your depth. Now if Katy played well in India you could make an argument for this scheduling, but she doesn't. Players like Em who love the country and enjoy playing in these conditions, it makes complete sense to play here. She knows exactly how to do her scheduling as she's now a wily 'vet' ;)

Anyway rant over. I'm a massive believer in Katy's potential and I feel she's gone slightly sideways this year not helped by this type of scheduling.

Spot on philwrig with your rant vis-a-vis scheduling, playing to chase cheap points, being top 250 having earned it or not, coming back to hunt you long term,  etc.

Doesn't seem to be very canny scheduling at all. For the longer term development she should be playing 5/6 events on clay over the next few months. It might see a stagnation in her ranking short term but her game will develop.

Why assume she is going for easy points? Perhaps she wants to see more of India, or she likes plying outdoors in the sun, or she is enjoying the company.

And perhaps she is not interested in having a 'clay court swing'.  Her game is far more suited to hard and grass so perhaps she wants to stick on hard and get enough points in the bag to aim for entry into events in the new extended grass season.

I strongly suspect she is heading to Japan - in which case flying to India for one event, then home, then back out to the Far East, seems a bit odd, when she could have competed in Barnstaple and trained at home before making the trip.

But hey, not for me to second guess. Just hope she recovers from her heat stroke and is all ok.

If you're going to be a top 100 player, and I 100% believe Katy can be /will be, you can't avoid the clay on tour, also think it's massively beneficial for the development of your game. Laura/Hev/JoKo never avoided the clay and they are our top players.
