dont know if you're aware but the scottish national championships took place last month for the first time in a few year and had a very strong field with some of the top juniors playing, ewan moore, (although he didnt actually turn up according to the score sheet) aidan mchugh, vincent gillespie, ewan lumsden all playing, although i think this tournament was a mandatory event for people hoping to be considered for the scottish junior commonwealth games team but not a bad turn out for its first year!
Yes I did see that, good news, the more tournament opportunities the better. The email out to players almost read like a threat..."if you want funding you MUST enter"...good to see a kick up the bottom. More players underneath the very top will improve if they have more opportunities to play the best.
Today is the closing date for entries into our "national" tournament, over 160 entries now, but disappointing numbers in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, especially because the finals day is in Glasgow.
Jordan Gray is managing the top tier event for 1.1-3.1 so I'm not sure who has entered that as it is invitation only.
Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow hosted our first National Finals at the weekend, with a £3000 prize money and travel expenses pot. We had 200 entrants nationwide and 300 qualifying matches played. Winners from qualifying all attended Glasgow and battled it out on Saturday against other players of a similar rating. We are hoping to at least double the size of this event next year.
We are running our National Championships for the 2nd year and work will be starting soon to promote. There are more qualifying leagues this time (from 8 to 12) meaning it should cover almost all of the country. It gives players of all standards a chance to compete locally against other players of a similar British Tennis Rating. Then winners progress to the National finals, this year held in Tipton Sports Academy in October.
