On way traffic at the moment. Kyle seems a step of the pace to me. Perhaps fatigue has begun to kick in after a long week.
Kyle does seem to mentally tire quite quickly and when he loses focus his game falls away badly. It is hardly uncommon in a young player but it is something he will need to find a way of dealing with.
Until recently, I would have agreed with you but in the last few months he has shown a lot more resilience. Today was simply a "bridge too far" and he has had to play 6 matches in 6 days. I don't understand why they waited until Monday to start the qualies
Well yes he has made improvements and 6 matches in 6 days can be quite tough. However only one went to three sets and more importantly if you are going to win tournaments then you are mostly going to have to win 5 or more matches in a week. It's a bloody tough slog out on the tour and Kyle still has some way to go in adapting to that. Not that I want to be negative, it has been a great week for him with far more positives than negatives.
They always start qualifying on Monday here because it allows all of the second round losers from Indian Wells who entered here the chance to play. If they started on Sunday only 2nd round losers from half of the Indian Wells draw would be able to play here and that would obviously be unfair.

Kyle was right in the match until the tie break and then he seemed to lose it mentally. In the tie break, he tried a serve and volley tactic which he had never used up until then....
Second point in the tie break was probably key. He was 1-0* and played a beautiful point but put the final ball into the net when an open court was awaiting. If he had won that point things might have been very different.

Second set he ran out of gas and his head went.
Excellent week making a semi final of the highest points scoring challenger and taking out 3 top 100 players and scoring in on a career high. (Will go if he wins a match in Miami)
Thanks, good to know what I saw wasn't a good Kyle. I hope to be able to see him in Miami
Kyle only has 35 points to come off before the end of Wimbledon on 6th July, so there is massive room for ranking improvement during that period. If he continues to play the way he did for most of this week, he has to be in with an outside chance of getting a direct entry into the Wimbledon MD.
What a fantastic week for him, to progress so deep into what was a very heavily stacked Challenger beating a string of players ranked at least 50 places above him, back to back can only be applauded. Kyles development has been pretty linear with a consistent upward gradient, any flattening off has been purely related to gaining exposure and experience as opposed to chasing points. i think he has done enough from a rankings perspective to lift him to where he needs to be to access the level of competition he needs.
Fortunately the grass court season is a land of opportunity in that the LTA have it within their power to give their players what they need but as we see year on year the players have to be at a level to be able to take those opportunities otherwise they are pointless in all respects.
One of the most exciting things about these 50 points is that they were hard earned ie played and beat the next tier up of opposition, the guys who consistently appear in the first round of GS competition through entry, consecutively beating them makes me hopeful he will feature in the main draw at RG and New York. I am mindful that 5 set tennis is a real step up but some main draw progress might not be far off.
Pity and the matches have apparently caught up with Kyle as RJA suggests so still work to do in that regard, but it will come.
However, I absolutely agree with Bob that the previous more general sudden falling away in matches and not keeping them competive after say good starts and one setback, which seemed often not that related to fitness, has definitely looked hugely much less of an issue in the last 6 months or so. Kyle has generally kept very competitive right through matches and seemed to becoming a better matchplayer with his play at crucial points. It has been something I and others have commented on.
Overall a really good week for Kyle with these succesive impressive wins.
Yes, examine why he fell away in this match, but it has not for some time looked a particular issue. This time it may largely have been a physical and mental tiredbess issue, and if so it is a timely message and is something he can continue to work on as he matures.
Get fitter, get stronger, but very good signs re his game in general.
Is there no news on that still? Has he changed his mind since the DC ruling?
A shame for Kyle, I feel if the quarters had been played on Friday he would have had a much better chance. But two matches in one day at the back end of the tournament, after coming through qualifying, was a big task. However a great week overall. The semis of any Challenger is a good result but of this heavily-loaded one, it is extra-special.
Fingers firmly crossed for a winnable first round in Miami.
I'm not too disappointed about the loss, as Kyle's had his best week so far. Clearly stamina is still an issue and is why it would be unfair/wrong to pick him for the DC given Wardy's current record in that arena. Having said that there's been a marked improvement from last year, but it's clearly still a WIP.
I thought at the start of the year a year end ranking at about 125 would mean a very successful year with a good rate of progression. But Kyle's well ahead of that progression, but I don't want to jinx anything by forecasting him to breakthrough a massive landmark a little bit earlier. Fabulous stuff.
Great week for Kyle; the wins showcased his strengths and the loss highlighted room for improvement. Kyle is only 20, and I think it's fair to balance his success (5 wins out of 6; one over JWR 1; 3 consecutive top-100 wins; CH scalp) with pointing out where he can improve, namely physically (hopefully not a mental loss). Give Kyle a non-seed in Miami and I think that he will have a shot.
