Scott Clayton, in R2, won as many games against Mertens as Toby did.
I know you're a real fan of Toby and have been predicting top 500 since this time last year. And I sincerely hope it proves rights. I like the guy, nice all-rounded game and good attitude. But I wouldn't put money on him to do well (although top 500 is fine, it's well within most of the players' capacities).
I cannot comment on Scott's match in round 2 as I never saw it. However I did see Scott's first round match and he didn't play anywhere near the level Toby did in his match.
No special focus on Toby, I just believe that he has the potential along side Tom F, JWH and Bambo to move through to the next level (Sub 500). There aren't that many others in the mix.
Mertens looked the class player out of everyone on Tuesday.
You're quite right - wouldn't it be nice if that quartet made the breakthrough and were sub-500 in the next few months? (would make Bob happy too )
You were also quite a fan of Scott's, I believe ? Mentioned a few times, I think, that he had the potential to go a lot higher but had been plagued by injuries. Do you still think so? (I only saw him once, about two years ago, so probably not relevant now).
GB ranked 7 to 12 have a total of 70 ranking points to defend over the Miami fortnight and have totalled 12 in this first week that will count to that fortnight. For the IW fortnight, they have been defending 51 points and will replace these with 19 points, though no GB futures counting there.
Add to thar, such continuing little sign of significant movement below the top 12, including the quartet mentioned above, and I can recall feeling better about the GB men.
Hope next week goes a lot better.
But Indiana's 20 top 500 women has much more chance of happening and happening sooner than Bob's 20 top 500 men !

I saw Scott take out a seed at Wirral last year(?) whilst carrying an injury and that impressed me. He's been out injured for a while and is just starting to pick up ranking points. I was a little disappointed with his level against Ryan, but it's difficult to account for performance in a one off match. He's definitely under ranked and will climb up the rankings. It will probably take him several months to climb into the top 600-700, but he is going in the right direction as he will still struggle to make main draw at present, but who knows in 12- 18 months time.
Andy Bettles, Scott, Joe S are probably in the next bracket as have potential, but not quite ready to break into top 500 just yet.
The two players I have missed out are Neil P and Richard Gabb who should be top 500 with some consistent performances. Leaving out Evo as i'm not expecting him back for a while.

Of course, that could have been at darts, down the pub, as they say.

Sadly, I am going to have to agree with you on that one too. The men are looking further than ever from the elusive 20 in top 500.
I don't see any realistic prospect of it happening for many, many years. It was only ever close because the LTA had a couple of years of putting on lots of home futures. Now that they have changed policy it won't happen without a substantial improvement in the quality of players coming through.
Cheer up! 4 in the top 100 in the next 2 years is not impossible. Andy, James, Kyle, Liam even Bryden? We will also begin to get an idea of how our 16 year olds are beginning to pan out. Similarly Cameron and Faris. Much more interested in the level at which the top 5 and those under 23 are playing at.
Re the above, yes, I agree, I think Indy is going to see joy with the top 500 women way before Bob does with his top 500 men.
The girls are looking promising. But it's really skinny on the boys' side - and I'm not too convinced re Canter and some of the other youngsters (and they're aren't that many to start with),

Not forgetting Aljaz Bedene ..
