Everyone else as shocked as me? Obviously needs to just play against people in the top 250...

That's the best I've seen Neil play for a long time. Serve very well, returned superbly. It was very comfortable, although the top seed didn't play anywhere near what his ranking suggested.

Played similar against Felipwo in Tunisia. Just wish he could do it consistently. First thing he told me was he served 5 aces on the trot at one point. (I'm always moaning at him about double faults). aww  not sure how well his back will hold out tomorrow - although didn't think he would manage today either.

I've always thought that Neil's good tennis is good enough to get him inside the top 250, but his consistency level has been letting him down. I remember back at the end of 2012 when he was on that great winning run and it looked like he was making a major breakthrough. Still think he's got enough time to get up there in the rankings.

Well done Neil let's hope can keep that form going

That sounds like a good incentive to lose before the final. Is this what they call reverse psychology ? your right was shorties idea !

From live scores:

Marcus Willis comfortable as expected - a set and a break up

Dave Rice - a set down, but holding firm in the second set

Willbomb completes a 6-2 6-3 win over the other Marcus W, but Dave R goes down 6-1 7-5

Neil's back is obviously holding out as he leads comfortably at 6-2 4-1*

Predictions were spot on for the British players.

Dan C is a set and a break up. Neil & Marcus Willis through - all in the top half of the draw.

No joy for Andy, Scott and Dave.

The H2H would suggest Dan C has Marcus' number. Would like to see the winner of that QF take the title.

I'll predict a Cox v Westerhof final - although Neil is playing well enough to take out Dan.

British futures events are joke with respect to entrants.

If you are aged over 24 and in still playing futures you need to take a hard look in the mirror. Fair enough if you are coming back from injury like Evo, but others welll.....

 controversial and too generalised.

15K's are there as a stepping stone to challengers.

Futures can be used to build confidence when things aren't going your way at a higher level or as a warm up for bigger events.

players who went to US college may still require them as they start at a much later age

Average age of top 100 is over 27

I have not read such manipulated statistics since I last went on the Daily Mail website.

Average of top 100 maybe 27, BUT the average to break into the top 100 is 23.  Very few 27-35 year olds break into the top 100 for the first time at that age (maybe ward). Yes there are many 27-30 in the top 100, but the majority of them broke the top 100 at a younger age.

At 24 you should be playing challangers I feel.

Yes they are a stepping stone agreed. But a stepping stone for youngsters 16-22- 24?.   Maybe someone could get the bare stats on this.  How many players have achieved a highest ranking of  around 300 after the age of 24 and then go to break the top 100. few I feel.
