Week 10 - ATP Masters 1000 - Indian Wells, CA, USA (JW & doubles)- Hard

Not sure why this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Dino has drawn Mitchell Krueger in QR1. He's the 11th Q seed and will face Nishioka in the FQR should they both win.

RE: Week 10 - ATP Masters 1000 - Indian Wells CA, USA (JW)- Hard

So I don't cause someone to have a seizure over my lack of following procedure:

QR1: (q11) James Ward WR 108 vs Mitchell Krueger WR 291 (CH 288).

I'm firmly in the camp that James much more likely to lose this given the exertions and emotional energy expended over the last week.

He should scrape by if he can familiarise himself sufficiently with the different court speed.

It's because the men's qualifying draw only came out in the early hours of this morning! Anyway, thanks for posting it.

Let's hope James can just get over his jetlag pretty quickly - whenever I travel to the States just get knackered by about midnight UK time, and he'll be playing later than that. Though unlike me, he's a professional athlete...

quite like indian wells/miami as always have a good chance to reach R2 if qualify, though don't get a huge number of points for doing so

I suspect it depends what class he was travelling too. I heard they were travelling on the Monday, but nothing was mentioned as to whether they were flying together. I imagine you'd get a good chill out on a private jet as opposed to cattle class. I daresay James can't afford to travel business class.

By rough estimates, most likely wrong, James might've landed within the last few hours or so. Decent QR1 draw for a potentially drained guy but a loss is very possible.

I can't see James in today's schedule, so happily another day to prep and adjust to the new surface.

He's last on Court 2 by my watch.

James left Davis Cup press duties very early on Sunday to get to the airport (it's never been confirmed that was why he cut his dead rubber short but I wouldn't be surprised if a flight was booked for him the second Andy clinched the tie). He is, obviously, not the only player who played Davis Cup in the draw, and he should come through that section comfortably.

He was flying American Airlines from one of his tweets, and his coach Darren Tandy took a selfie from what looks like economy class, so I assume James was in economy too!

Krueger is v winnable though, and hopefully he'll be fully refreshed for his final match

Would have been a nice touch from the LTA (or Andy!) to pay to get James upgraded as a thank you for his efforts. I just fear that the matches on the weekend and then long travelling plus 8 hours jet lag will prove too much.

I haven't counted, but I don't think there will be that many players playing Davis Cup and then in qualifying. Certainly all the other GB and US players will get more rest.

The late start won't help either; say 6pm =2am UK time

Generally elite athletes are used to this sort of thing - I know the England rugby teams often have a sleeping schedule on long haul flights for example.
