Ali Collins is also in the draw, having come through qualifying. But plays the second seed.

And Fran Jones got in as a LL, having lost out in the last round of qualifying. But got the fourth seed.

Wow.

Young Fran Jones, based out in Spain, certainly made the most of the LL spot, putting out the fourth seed with two breadsticks !

Good and bad news . . .

R1 (L32)

(5) Emily Appleton lost to (Q) Kariann Pierre-Louis (USA) 6-4 6-1


But, following Fran's amazing win against the fourth seed, qualifier Ali went and did one better and beat the second seed !!

R1:

Ali COLLINS (GBR) def. Alexandra SABE (USA) [2] 7-5 6-2


In the doubles, Eliz Maloney got a win. But Emily, playing with Levine, as third seeds, lost out 13-11 in the MTB. And Ali and Fran lost too.

Emily lost to the girl who took out Eliz in qualifiers, so I suspect this American girl is rather unranked(not got a full set of scoring points)

A good opening round for the qualifiers and lucky losers (all won) while the seeds suffered (just the 7th seed left)

Even for juniors, and especially at lower grades where rankings and seedings have to be taken with a huge pinch of salt, that's fairly spectacular all round.

Fran won 6-3  6-1

Ali won 6-2  6-3

 

And Eliz won her doubles, 6-2 6-3

 

PS Both Fran and Ali have several zero-counters in their points tally and so, this being a grade 3, will get a decent boost up the rankings following these results.

Ali will now play Morgan Coppoc (USA) in the final.

In the doubles final, Eliz's pair came up just short:
