RE: Davis Cup 2015 - World Group Quarter Final - 17th-19th July

Welcome to the board maz2015.

What surface would the Aussies like least...........clay? I am not saying we will play it on that but I feel whatever surface we choose as our favourite, it'll be there's as well. (Makes for a cracking tie!)

After picking up 4090 points for beating France (4000 for a QF win + 90 for beating the team ranked 3), GB jump 4 places to 6th in the new Davis Cup rankings, overtaking Italy, Canada, Spain (!) and Australia

Well, that may well be the end of Clément's career as Daivs Cup captain . ..

Nothing sure but talk of a change being needed.

And Yannick Noah's name getting thrown about again

Slow indoor court would be just right in my opinion as it would nullify Kyrgios and Groth a lot making it quite straight forward for Andy. Hewitt and Kokkinakis would also probably favour a faster court so I think slowing it down would definitely help.

I wouldn't suggest clay though as even though Murray has had such a great year on it in 2015, I don't think he'd be keen playing on it September with his schedule.

I think Ward has a big chance in this tie to pick up a rubber against the Aussie no.2 singles player as well and played very well on the slower court in Glasgow earlier in the year

Doubles should be more straight forward than against France although Hewitt seems to pick up a lot of good results when he plays doubles and obviously a big server like Groth partnering him makes it trickier

Aww LOL ... well, one last one for now before I get back to work then - this quarter century may already have been mentioned (in which case, apologies!) but I forgot to check before I went yesterday and wasn't sure enough to tweet this immediately after the match ...

Yesterday's win against Gilles Simon was Andy's 25th singles win in a row against French players in best of 5 set matches, i.e. since losing to Tsonga at the 2008 Aus Open. That must be why I didn't feel too worried even when he was a set and a break down (and apparently out on his feet) yesterday!

I've *really* missed Steven's stats. I'm delighted that you are finding some time for us again!

Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail has been writing about possible SF venues :

www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-3168254/Great-Britain-s-Davis-Cup-semi-final-against-Australia-heading-Glasgow.html

No clues to his thinking in that title then

Apparently if Glasgow, it would again be to the Emirates Arena ( with expanded capacity from the USA tie ). The bigger and impressive Hydro Arena is booked two days before the tie starts for a live show of Mrs Brown's Boys ( and the venues need to be available for the week ). But the rather more functional Emirates did the bizz before.

A British Tennis forum block booking ?

Maybe we could challenge the Andy Murray forum folk, then err maybe not from some accounts

I see that Belgium are indeed home to Argentina as Sue Barker said, and I dared to doubt ( based on reports that it was the other way around ).

From previous thread info ( Steven, so no doubt correct ), if we reach the final we would be home to Argentina ( maybe Andy would play them this time ! - since I do recall the previous away tie ), but away to Belgium.

I think Andy wants Glasgow.

NEC Birmingham 16000 - has Florence and the Machine booked 19th Sept ...
Manchester Arena 21000 - has Florence and the Machine booked 18th Sept ... Manch Central = conference
NIA Birmingham 12000 - has Michael McIntyre booked 18th/19th Sept ...
Hydro in Glasgow 12000 has Florence and the Machine playing Mon 14th Sept and Mrs Brown on Wed 16th Sept.

ARENAS WITH CAPACITY OF 8000+ (SEMI-FINAL) and are not shown as 'booked'

Emirates Glasgow 7700 (apparently it might be possible to extend to 9000)
Echo Arena in Liverpool 12000
First Direct Arena in Leeds 13000
Odyssey in Belfast 10000
Wembley Arena 12500

I know Glasgow is favoured by some, Andy especially, but I think its more correct to stage this where the maximum amount of people can attend. The south and Scotland make it harder for some to attend because of distance so I think somewhere more central is again fairer. Looking at that list, would Leeds not seem like a good compromise?

Argentina on hard in the final would be a dream.
