Yes, well done Gary and team! And also a shout out to the winners of the women's event, Wilton (as far as I can tell, a small 4 court club in West London) featuring Aimee Gibson, Olivia Nichols and Beth Askew who beat Holcombe Brook (a 9 court club near Ramsbottom, Lancs) featuring Freya Christie and Anna Fitzpatrick. Went down to a tie-break shoot-out!
Congrats to A1, particularly impressive to win when Marcus and Neil both lost their singles.
With regard to the point Gary made in a previous thread about the LTA scheduling a clash between their two futures events and the AEGON Team championships, they had (in fairness) scheduled the Roehampton one to start and finish earlier (all over by Friday) and the Nottingham one to start later (qualies start on Monday) leaving the whoile weekend free.
The only people who would have missed any of the finals were the two players who reached the Roehampton final (does this explain Marcus' poor showing in semi final v Evo?).
I accept that given that there are many, many weeks when there are no futures tournaments at all, they could have avoided it altogether, but they have clearly made allowances.
Anyway, well done A1- you reign supreme! I would be interested to know Gary's view on whether this event does anything to bring players through? I recognise the names of virtually all of the players who played in the match with DL Raynes Park, are there any young stars being blooded by this tournament or is it just a place for established lower ranks journeyman to earn a few quid?
Not being critical just wondering whether it actually serves a purpose?
A lot of juniors / those just starting off in pros / recently retired play in the regional round-robin groups as well as the kind of players that are in the final. It's a great way for the younger / less experience players to test their mettle against the next rung up. Also, a team environment often brings the best out in players, particularly the younger / inexperienced ones and shows them what they are capable of.
