RE: Rankings

Wasn't Heather defending 55 points too?

Yeah, she beat WC Claire Liu in San Jose R1 last year and those 55 points are replaced by a 1 counter, but she has only fallen 6 spots to live ranked 113 (although may drop further depending on other results).

Thanks. Judging by today I'd be worried her ranking will continue to fall. Looks totally devoid of confidence at the WTA level.

Some massive changes showing in the live rankings today as the system changes. I can see ten players with drops or rises of over 40 places, as well as a number of players back in the rankings.

Edit: - see Michaels detailed post below !

Finally the new old order is with us smile

The first consequence is we welcome back 8 old entrants and 1 new entrant to the WTA rankings. The new entrant is Tanysha Dissanayake, and of those returning, there are new CHs for Alice Gillan, Emilie Lindh, Ola Pitak and Anna Popescu. Mandy Carreras and Emily App also receive significant rankings boosts with their ITF points added on.

On the negative side, players like Tara, Emily WS, Eden, Lissey Barnett and Freya see ranking falls this week, even if adding points to their totals, having played only at the W25 level and above this year. Beth also has a large fall, but has dropped points this week, though next she will have those replaced again with her Woking QF. Lower down, Vic Allen, Ella Taylor and Chloe also have large falls, Chloe with her still win a W15 MD match, being a little more appropriately placed now.

At the top end of the rankings, Katie is the only upwards mover - too late for US Open qualifying unfortunately - as our top 10 average takes another significant hit again. So it's good to have 33 women back on the rankings again, but all that red at the top remains a real dampener.

This week's rankings still show predominantly red at the top unfortunately. Fran helps a bit, but we are still -15 on the week.

Next week Sam will be in the top 10 replacing Katy D, which should help a little, though would be good to see Katy back on a court too. Fran has had two retirements in two weeks, which suggests she needs a bit of recovery time too.

Lower down there are predominantly ranking falls for most players too, except for Beth, Ali and Tanysha who all picked up wins the previous week at Woking. Ali and Tanysha have CHs, the only two of the week, and Emily Arbuthnott is back in the rankings with her 1 pt from Woking, and her 1 pt from Chiswick will keep her there, as she loses points from both events too. She now has 3 counters till July next year, but it remains unclear how much more she will play in the near future.

Considering this was a home tournament week, it's a distinctly uncheerful set of rankings. Next week is a little greener at the moment, but the small rises after turn into small drops by the end of the week. What is so noticeable at the moment is our lack of players in the WTA tournaments. Would be good to see Harriet and Katie S climb back there, and most of all to see Katie B back on a tournament court again. This week she falls back over the 200 mark again. disbelief

Here's the full GB rankings table to go with CD's summary. Sam now GB #9 and Katy D falls out, now along with Gabi and Naomi this year.

Here are this weeks GB WTA rankings. Not that much movement except for a good upward rise for Emilie, and decent ones for Ola and Kasia Pitak. All three have new CHs, Ola for the second week in a row, and she will have another better one post US Open, following her first run to the final last week. Otherwise only Emily App had a double figure change, losing 28 places following a 4 pt drop.

Here's the post US Open ranking list. Positive moves in the top 10 for Jo, Heather, Harriet, Maia, and Sam. Maia moves to a new CH, though whether this reflects a 'true' ranking for her has been discussed elsewhere.

Outside the top 10, Mandy moves back nearer it to GB #13, and about 100 places off Fran, current GB #10. Big new CHs for Emilie and Ola too, with positive rises for Freya and Lissey, even though both are now behind Emilie in the rankings. A rise of 210 places for Emily Arb, who is now back in the top 1000, and can obviously go much higher again if she was to continue to play, but presumably will be back to university again soon - I think she has a final year to go.

Brilliant to see Konta edging nearer the top 10, and nice to see Hev back inside the top 100, even if it is just for one week - I see she has withdrawn from WTA Seoul next week where she would have actually got in the main draw directly, so no imminent chance for her to replace those 110 WTA Quebec points that are falling off next week, but she has at least had 2 good 100-125k events in Vancouver and New Haven, so could have been far worse.

Harriet ranking is looking healthier again, and she only has 63 points coming off before the end of the year, so at worst she should be able to finish in the top 150, but I don't see her in any upcoming lists. You see the likes of Schoofs and Paquet outside the top 150 getting into Zhengzhou premier directly, and the circa 200 Raina and Rodionova both getting into WTA Nanchang directly, so either would have been a good chance for her to pick up points.

Katie B sensibly looks like she is waiting for her PR to come into play (unless it's even worse than we think and she has no choice and is still a long way off), but either way, with Beijing, Tianjin and points from other Asian events coming off soon, she's going to temporarily fall outside the top 300. Really good to see Jodie back, and Sam still picking up useful points, but that top end has obviously seen much better days - there were 8 Brits in the top 220 just 13 months ago, whereas it's obviously just the 3 for now. Hopefully some of those 250-500ers can have a bit of a mini spike in the forthcoming Roehampton double header.

Week 38 rankings. The top 10 marked mostly by Heather's fall of 22 places, but good also to see Jodie's return and Sam win two WTA qualifying rounds.

Emily WS, Lissey and Emily Arb all get 40-65 pt rises and are the main upward rises of the week. There are no CHs this week.

A week of no significant ranking change. In fact probably the most remarkable fact about the week was that between them GB players added only 1 point to their totals, that solitary point being gained by Sam. A few more points will be added on next week thankfully!

This week's women's GB rankings make for a little more cheerful reading, though still not amongst the top 10. Indeed in the top 10 the trend is still downwards, as it has been for some weeks now, with this week Naiktha contributing most to the ongoing slide.

Below the top 10 the picture is more interesting however. Mandy continues her climb back up towards the top 300, entering the top 400 this week, and next week she will be up around the 350 mark and will go above Gabi into the GB #12 position. Behind her climbs for Eden and Tara, and a larger one for Emma R, who will in turn enter the top 500 next week. Beth gains a good 60 places, but its Ali Collins with the climb of the week up 145 places to a CH 911.

Finally we have a new entrant to the rankings too, congrats to Eliz Maloney who makes the WTA rankings for the first time. This means that we have 35 ranked players this week, but it will be this week only. The anomaly that has been Chloe Compson, will lose her ranking and pass into history next week, and indeed with the change in the points system will not regain it through anymore W25 WCs. With the change in the WTA points system requiring a FQR win or a first round win at W25 level to gain a point, Chloe and any others like her, will have actually to win matches to gain a future ranking. That can only be a good thing, and may act as some break on the value of paying for those WCs, as has clearly happened in the past.
