Week 6 - Challenger ($50,000) - Launceston, Australia - Hard

A tricky 1st round draw here for Kyle despite the rankings gap. Brydan with a pretty nice draw.

R32: (3) Kyle Edmund WR 148 v (WC) Matthew Barton (AUS) WR 609

R32: Brydan Klein WR 251 v Sanam Singh (IND) WR 419

Great to see him seeded in challengers should make life easier in the early rounds on occasions, although the general difference in quality at this level appears to be marginal with so many younger players on the way up.

Having had a look at Bartons record he looks like the type of opposition you would expect at this level but unlikely to progress much beyond it, (23 futures SF last year). Then thought I would check out where he would lie in the greater scheme of things in prospects in Australian tennis. We have 56 males players registered on the ITF site who's name begins with A v Australia who have 90 ish.

My eye was then caught by one of our B's a Mr Roderick Bastard, surprised that I had only seen his name come up in Jeff Stellings posts and then not in context, I thought his career need further investigation.

Closer analysis shows just how good collegiate tennis is as a stepping board to the pro circuit. Rod has been a touring pro for more than 15 years now and at the ripe old she of 41 despite the majority of his income being as a business man in sport is still able to step out at the challenger level and win.

All this he puts down to the high quality mentoring of his tennis coach at I think the University of South Carolina!!!

Obviously there is more to Barton than meets the eye but I would expect Kyle to come through unless there are issues of fatigue. Nice draw for Brydan but who knows if he will be able to take advantage of it!

Barton is the player who in Burnie last week, got in as a LL and then went on to reach the semis, so he is clearly playing well. En route to the semis, be beat Brydan before eventually losing out to Chung (Kyle's conqueror) in 3 sets. Chung went on to win the final.

He also beat Ward in a challenger final a couple of years back when he was really breaking through (set his CH of 201), before being hit by injuries. I assume, by his current ranking, that he's not been fully fit for the last 12 months either. Definitely very under-ranked.

That was when James would have been early 2013 when James was ranked about 250. Difficult to workout exactly what the course of his dip is but over the last year he has been playing futures with a run of SF losses. Given last weeks performance let's hope Kyle is now rested and ready to go.

Barton actually quit tennis last summer due to a combination of repeated minor injury problems and frustration with not making the breakthrough that he had hoped for. After a few months of not playing he decided to give it another crack and so here he is.

Thanks for that, difficult to work out exactly what was going on purely from his ITF activity, I wish him well with his comeback but hoping for an early stall this week!

Keeping half an eye on the secopnd half of Brydan's match while trying to finish off some work, I noticed he had at least one match point when he first served for the match at 5-4 in the 2nd but then got broken. He then rebroke immediately only to get broken back again and then lost the tiebreak. He didn't live to regret it though:

L32: Brydan Klein WR 243 beat Sanam Singh (IND) WR 464 (CH 293 in 2012) by 7-6(5) 6-7(2) 6-2
