RE: Week 6 - ATP 250, Memphis, USA - Indoor Hard

Kokkianakis was a tough draw - beat Gulbis at AO and pushed sam groth to 5 sets in rd 2. Impressed with the scoreline from Liam. Onwards and upwards

A quick look back to what Liam was doing this time last year puts this loss into perspective. Losing in the 1st round of a British 10K, following that up wish a British Tour appearance, ranked 470.

12 months on we are disappointed he "only" ran a top 150 player to 2 tie-breaks in an ATP 250 (qualies or otherwise) and I believe follows it up with another 250 qualifying campaign next week

Onwards and upwards indeed

yes agree, Liam has done incredibly well, its like a switch has been turned on.

going back a number of years, when the boys were in junior singles/doubles slam finals, I always felt that Kyle was going to do well although he was a year or so younger, but wasn't so sure about the others. So am really pleased to see Liam's progression this past year.

being a good junior does not always translate to making progress at senior level Kasiri Brewer and dare I say it Golding are proof of that

No idea about Kasiri, but to my mind Oli's tennis was well capable of ( and still could ) get him pretty far in seniors, but you need more than just the tennis ability.

Whereas, unfortunately, the jury is still very much out on say Luke. I really do hope that he can push on into the top 500 this year.

Thank goodness for Kyle and Liam that they have each other or just the one would so stand out among young ( say under even 24 ) GB guys. The next ones are not yet even top 500, although Cameron and Farris certainly could be ( and I imagine will be ), but for college.

Though, of course, the 89 / 90 guys are still pretty young with potential to go higher, if perhaps limited assistance.

How much the slowing down of players coming through compared to a year ago when we seemed to have much more depth and numbers of players on the rise ( and very close to having 20 guys in the top 500 ) is down to the LTA sucking much of their enthusiasm out is a matter for debate.

How much the LTA cares, if they are not seen as potential top 100, is also debatable.
