Katie Swan

I thought I'd start a new thread for her as I am guessing we will be following her in the years to come.

I'm pretty exited by what I hear, talent and temperament Living in the US (why do all our good players have to have a few years away from the UK???)

I hear Judy's already looking to put her in the Fed cup team in a year or two.

I'm not sure where she's at with whether she's turned pro yet, so any info on this would be gratefully received.

Think I read that Katie will not be taking any prize money for now to keep her options open but is planning some ITFs this month.

I'm abit confused about that. I thought you could take prize money at ITFs even if you're not pro, certainly I know girls who have in the UK.

I believe you have to be careful if you want to play US college tennis and that Paul M may be able to help us with his knowledge of the subject...Paul? :)

To play for a college in NCAA divisions 1 and 2 you must be an amateur. For Division 3 the college determines the amateur status so there may be a bit more flexibility. So to be safe and be eligible to play for the best colleges you must be an amateur.

She can take prize money without jeopardising her eligibility for college so long as it doesn't exceed expenses incurred (as defined by NCAA).  This is on a tournament by tournament basis.

Thanks for the info. I'm still a little confused however as the girls who I know who have taken ITF prize money here have gone on to US colleges (no clue what divisions they're playing in), and the tourneys were in their home town, so they were definitely in profit.

TBH, unless they were in the finals, the ITF prize money is so poor that a couple of decent lunches and car par fees should cover it !!!

I seem to remember one of them getting a few hundred. Lunches would only cover a tenner or so, and car parking is free. I guess the colleges can't care that much if it's not that much.

So Katie needs to find some ITFs located near an expensive restaurant so she can spend whatever she wins on lunch

Hopefully the size of the lunches she is going to have to turn down by the time she is applying to college will be so ridiculous that the thought will be out of the question. Fancy eating you way through the earnings from a Wimbledon main draw wild card. I could do it, but not at one sitting.

Probably not as hard as it sounds once you take into account the prices in the Wimbledon canteen!

Got some some very encouraging feedback whilst I was at the FedCup about Katie, not a negative word was muttered. Great parents and very appreciative of the LTA support, so certainly no chance of her changing allegiance down the line.

Good to hear, Phil. And I am glad your mind has been put at rest about Katie possibly abandoning GB :)
