Well, having come in for the last two games (hence not wholly sure of the first set score), I'm happy to say that Mr Broady certainly looked very fully engaged ... and indeed, when his ball bounced back on a net cord, both engaged and enraged! Looked like some very good play indeed was going on.
For the record, since it doesn't appear to have been recorded:
SF: (Q) Hans Hach & Luís Patino (MEX/MEX) CR 954 (496+458) defeated Liam Broady & Dennis Novikov (USA) CR 603 (286+317) by 7-6(4) 6-4
Disappointing result to which to come home after an evening at the opera.
It might be disappointing for you but I seriously doubt it was a disappointing result for Liam and Dennis. The chances that they actually wanted to win this match are virtually non-existent. You get results like this pretty much every week. Mostly it passes without comment because players generally know how to lose a match without making it look obvious. All you need is the odd "unforced error" on a big point or the occasional "poor choice" of shot and just for good measure you pretend to be angry or disappointed with yourself. Occasionally someone is dumb enough to make it obvious or you get a situation like in Maui last week were both teams were trying to lose and it attracts a bit of attention.
In no way should he tank a match. Completely in agreement with Indie and CD. Bad position to be in, but he has more sense and decency, from what I've heard, than to tank.
yes, I agree with the above three. also think as a northerner its just not what we do. when you start something. you finish to the best of your ability.
I think, even if Liam does miss the Q's in Memphis he may not be too bothered this once especially if he does well in the doubles. Don't know about the money side of it and how much that comes into it.
Oy, young missy - us southerners don't believe in tanking either !!
I meant to check the bookies' odds for this match, but forgot. Anyone know ?
Bet 365 last pre match odds were: Broady & partner 2/5 (1.40). Opponents were 11/4 (2.75). Think I've worked the latter out correctly from the decimal (had a drink or two tonight).
