RE: Week 4 - Challenger ($50,000) - Hong Kong - Hard

Another good win for Kyle, well done!

Nishioka's a good prospect himself, but looking at their H2H, Kyle's owned him! So hope it can continue tomorrow

Grrr just typed a whole post and deleted it.

Main thing was to say thanks for your concern Oakland2002 but i'm finding it better to watch the matches after they finish in livestream so i can skip forward if i want to (Oh how I wish there was a fastforward button on livestream and iplayer to avoid accidentally figuring out how many sets a match will go!!)

Its been a good 24 hours for the brits!

QF: Kyle Edmund WR 192 beat Saketh Myneni (IND) WR 262 (CH 241 last Oct) by 7-6(3) 6-1

SF: Kyle Edmund WR 192 v Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) WR 165 (CH 153 last Nov; 19yo junior CH 12 in 2012)

H2H: 4-0 - Kyle has played Nishioka twice in juniors (Canadian Open 2012 & junior Wimbledon 2013) and twice in Futures (Vero Beach 2013 & Sunrise last year), winning in straight sets every time without dropping more than 3 games in any of the 8 sets.

I've followed Nishioka's rise with interest. 8 months Kyle's junior, but both born in the same year, he's basically shadowed Kyle throughout his career at both junior and professional level, regularly getting thrashed when the two have met (I think Kyle's won both their pro encounters 3&1/1&3). When Kyle had that poor run at the back end of last year Nishioka finally surged past him into the top 160, but Kyle's winning again now. Should be an interesting match-up.

Another really good win for Kyle. Looking so comfortable at Challenger level now. I can see him winning a couple of tournaments this year. All of his early season points have now been covered and a win in the semis tomorrow would cover almost his entire haul for the 1st 6 months of last year. (83 out of 90).

A place in the top 100 by the end of the year is a very realistic goal, in my opinion, and personally, I am backing him to get there.

Great start to the year for Kyle and a sensible schedule so far.

What's Kyle's plans for the first few months of the year? Any insights?

Good work by Mr Edmund. The next generation is really making its mark: three of four SFs here, and Donaldson and Kozlov in the QFs in Hawaii.

Does winning ATP Challengers take a player into the top 100 or does it require making inroads into ATP main tour events as well?

very well done Kyle - congratulations on reaching the semi-final of the Hong Kong ATP Challenger.   Is this his first Challenger semi-final?

@EddieTheEagle

The current world number 100, Marcel Ilhan, has approximately 555 points. He has won one challenger (gaining 100 points), reached  2 other finals and gained a total of 125 points for those two and four other semi final earning him an extra 170 points. Those seven results account for over 70% of his  points and less than half of his countable results.  He has not reached the second round of any ATP tour tournament.

He shows it is definitely possible to reach the top 100 off of challenger events only, however obviously more points are available at ATP events so in theory they could climb the rankings faster but will also play tougher opposition meaning it may take longer playing those events. Right now, Kyle needs to find the right the balance of playing Challengers and ATP qualies and only he will know what that balance is.

If memory serves correctly this is his fourth challenger semi-final, with him already reaching a final in Japan(?) at the end of last year.

Steven keeps a record of all British players points scored over the last 12 months

See http://www.britishtennis.net/stats/ptdm.htm?n=1. (You can get to this from the British tennis home page) and scroll down to find Kyle

So this is indeed Kyle's 4th SF and yes he made the final at Yokohama in Nov
