RE: Week 4 - Great Britain F2 ($10,000) - Sunderland (Hard)

A tweet about Evo's loss ("Sunderland 10K R1: Another seeded Brit went out - 4th seed Evo beaten 3&0 by American qualifier Michael Grant USA WR 1070 (CH 1051 last Nov)") created a bit of a kerfuffle:

Christian Lyth @ChristianLyth
@GBtennis sweet Jesus what on earth is he doing?

Holly Sinclair @HolleySinclair
@GBtennis what has happened to him?

George Turner @GeorgeBTurner
@GBtennis What on earth is happening to him? After the USO in '13 he had it all going for him...

If Evo's tennis and / or mindset are still so far off the pace, it makes it more surprising that he didn't delay his return until he would qualify for a PR.

I know this was speculated about on the forum and I believe that the required period would have been up quite soon.

Now it appears likely that he will plunge much further down the rankings with no PR backup.

He would have had to wait until early March to qualify for a PR and even then it would have only been at around 280. That is assuming he was actually genuinely injured as presumably the ATP do actually require some form of "Doctors note" before they hand out PRs.

He's going to quit isn't he... I'm sorry to say I've given up on him.

I probably gave up on Dan a while ago, but I think it sunk in when his Twitter account was 'apparently used by a friend' who gloated about wealth and abused people. Could've been easily forgotten but those tweets are still up on his Twitter for all to see. The tweets may well have been by somebody else, and maybe Dan quit Twitter soon after, but neglecting to delete them (especially one using abusive terms) means that they are associated with him.

Yes, that is a perfectly reasonable position to take. It is just one more thing in a long, long line of incidents where Dan has failed to display the professionalism that is required to make a good career out of tennis.

The really sad part is that he easily has the talent to be top 100 player, and probably quite a bit better, if only he wanted it enough. Yes it is his life and he can live it how he wants but there are so many British players with only a small fraction of Dan's ability that bust their gut week in week out on the futures tour chasing the dream and getting no reward for their substantial efforts that it is hard not be angered and saddened in equal measures by Dan.

Against all odds, in part because his game can be such a joy to watch, I still hold out some hope that eventually there will be a genuine realisation on his part that he is utterly wasting his abilities and that a good career and life on the tennis circuit is there is he really wants it. Unfortunately I increasingly find that that hope has little rational basis.

Any truth to the story that Evans match was potentially fixed? It seems to be doing the rounds on Twitter - something about being 'taken off the board for suspicious betting'.

I don't know the full details, but would say that it would always be worth betting against Evo in any futures match against any opponent if you get good odds - maybe people have just cottoned onto that

Seeing that he lost last time too against someone equally lowly ranked, he might be on an accumulator to provide for his retirement.

I would guess that this is a bit like when the betting companies cried foul after getting burned by clued up tennis fans who backed Richard Bloomfield to cause a couple of big upsets on grass. That being said I would never rule anything out with Evo.

I agree. Any outsider can look at the difference in rankings, the result and the one-sided score and say that MUST be fixed. But nobody, surely, with an ounce of sense, could have had Evans as a clear favourite.

I hoped there's nothing sinister in this:

QF:  James Marsalek & Joe Salisbury CR 1369 (985+384) "defeated" (1) Luke Bambridge & Sean Thornley CR 476 (302+174) by a walkover

Interesting to know what the initial odds were, and how much 'Evo factor' ( I mean this innocently in that he can be just so bad in futures if not in the mood ) the bookies had built in to balance against his CH and best performances.

Accusations on twitter ( often from losing punters and also disgustingly abusive to players ) are unfortunately nothing new

Evans was 4/11, Grant 2/1.
