But it would appear to have been a late decision that he was ready enough to go and he will at least be competitively very rusty.
Let's give the guy some grace period before proclaiming that if it carries on like this ( one tournament ) he might chuck it.
That's not quite how I put it.
Dan has 108pts to defend in Feb out of 142pts.
If he cannot defend many points in the next few weeks, he will be ranked in the 650-700 range, will have to play futures and is unlikely to get the benefit of a seeding either.
It's well known that Dan dislikes the ITF futures circuit and if he has to play the futures circuit for any length of time he may call it a day. He nearly did it before.....
There is no doubt the talent is there - no one is sure about the attitude.

Dave Porter a break up in the second set having lost the first
Alex is a set and a break up.
Hoping Tom F is in good form this week. On his day he is probably the best player in the field(based on seeing him win both Manchester and Wirral last year pummelling in form Bossel and Smethurst)
Marshall completes what is probably the second biggest upset of the day to bring R1 to a close.

Well done Marshall !! Following up on some encouraging results towards the end of last year (I think that Marshall has finished uni now - is he going to now give it a proper go ? Or am I confusing him with someone else?). Anyway, if there are going to be upsets, nice to see it's a Brit in this instance that's doing the 'upsetting' :)
