RE: Week 3 - Great Britain F1 ($10,000) - Sheffield (Hard)

Adam TB was playing very well at the end of last year, but wasn't playing full time on tour. He definitely has the ability to move up a level into the top 1000 and higher and should beat Mark Whitehouse today.

Good win for Luke and Richard Gabb.

Marzi really struggling against Bruce. Having seen both players a few times i'm not convinced either player will climb the rankings significantly.

And yet, previously, people were saying how good James M was . . .

He was extremely uninspiring when I say him (about 18 months ago now). Was he a promising youngster who never made the move up?

Dan Evans is an early break down

Born April 1992, I don't think James really stood out particularly as a junior.

I have never seen him play, but two or three years ago he was getting such fairly consistent wins and I recall quite a number of close scorelines with much higher ranked players, that to me it did look very promising and I recall saying so.
His CH is WR 537 in May 13, just turned 21.

Pity he hasn't maintained this, let alone pushed on, for whatever reasons. As I say, his results and scorelines certainly didn't suggest that he was then overranked so I was thinking he would be a clear top 500 player by now.

That's a good-ish CH for age 21. Yet he doesn't seem to have been injured or anything? As you say, strange, that he's slipped backwards over the last couple of years (maybe there's been stuff going on that we don't know about). I believe he was based in Spain for a while and then changed ??? (Or am I imagining that?)

ANyway, he wins this one 7-5 in the third - hopefully, that'll help his confidence (I remember thinking he looked ill at ease, sort of scared of the ball, when I say him at the NTC - but that might have been a real bad day or something . .. )

5-5 in Dan v the German

Whitehouse won the second set 6-1 and him and Adam TB are into a third (Mark is the Imperial student who had that great run late last year isn't he?)

Dan COx has beaten Lewis 6-3 6-2

Marzi sneaked through 7-5. I've seen him several times last year. Nothing special in his game and generally error strewn, but did well in Qatar in December, so the ability may be there, but the consistency definitely isn't.

Lewis Burton has just lost 3&2 to Dan Cox and he is a talented player who just cannot get singles results despite all that natural ability.

Evo has just broken back and leads 6-5*

Evo playing brinksmanship in both sets. Won the 1st set 7-5 from a break down and is now down again at *1-3. Can he do it again ? Let's hope so. #Allez

Actually, I am just glad to see him back playing tennis again. I won't deny it, I had my doubts.

Luke Oakley is the youngster that Marcus rated, isn't he?

Will be interesting to see how he fares against Joe S.

Evo lost.

I can see him throwing the towel in on his tennis career if he fails to gets points over the next few weeks and ends up unranked.

Yes, but how else does he intend to earn a living ?

I think he's one of the few who will most certainly carry one because (a) he has the ability to make decent money in tennis (a rare feat), and (b) has no other obvious alternative.

I'm not sure who I want to win. Luke has a US college place I think so will be part time for a while.

I saw him play at Liverpool briefly and looked solid enough.

Pity re Evo.

But it would appear to have been a late decision that he was ready enough to go and he will at least be competitively very rusty.

Let's give the guy some grace period before proclaiming that if it carries on like this ( one tournament ) he might chuck it.
