Not sure about Grand Slam but was checking the Aus Open. In 2002 we had 3 in the main draw at the Aus Open, Martin Lee, Tim Henman & Greg Rusedski. We also had 3 in 2000 Jamie Delgado(as a Lucky Loser), Tim Henman &  Arvind Parmer (as a Qualifier). For 4 or more you have to go back to 1988 when we had 5 in the first round, 2 as Qualifers. Andrew Castle, David Felgate(Q), Chris Bailey(Q), Steve Shaw & Jeremy Bates.

Been a bit busy lately and apart from checking up on Murray's results at the HC, I've genuinely lost all track of British tennis.

So it's great to catch the very tail end of these two matches to see Liam and Kyle continue their 2014 form this week. A couple of fantastic wins and a handy 16 points to boot. 35+ on offer (including the minimum 10 points in the main draw) if they can qualify.

When you say on merit - do you mean direct entries? I assume you are talking men only as i'm certain we have had four women in the top 100 fairly recently when Bally, Anne K, Mel and Katie were top 100

As everyone has been saying great result for both Kyle and Liam.

A few days ago I was thinking that one qualifier through to R1 would be a good result - hopefully they will make it 2!

I am sure the $16k for reaching QR3 will be most welcome as well. To put into perspective how important (money wise) the grand slams are worth to the players, Heather will only get $11,300 for reaching the semi finals at Hobart (the Sydney and Auckland ATP250s are around $23k -$24k).

$34,500 for reaching R1.

Well done, both lads! jump.gif

Round-up, as I don't think it's been done yet:

QR2:  Liam Broady (GBR) WR 193 defeated Jared Donaldson (USA) WR 252 by 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-4
QR2:  Kyle Edmund (GBR) WR 192 defeated Austin Krajicek (USA) WR 154 biggrin by 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2

*****

FQR:  Liam Broady (GBR) WR 193 vs Michael Russell (USA) WR 156 (CH = 60 in August 2007 - Russell's 36 & apparently only 5'8"!)
FQR:  (qWC) Dane Propoggia (AUS) WR 323 (CH = 320 last December) vs Kyle Edmund (GBR) WR 192

Super. And be really super if they both now qualify.

I am almost certain that TMH means direct entrants plus qualifiers ( and guys ) when asking about when was the last time 3 and 4 Brits got into the main draw of a Slam 'on merit' - i.e. what precedent Kyle and / or Liam might set in making it the first time since...

I don't know, but I am sure at least one person will have answers :)

From the Beeb, which, yet again, fails to get its facts quite right where Kyle's birthplace is concerned! disbelief

I took the "on merit" to mean not as a wild card - I'm sure in the past, when many Brit players got wild cards to Wimbledon, there will have been occasions when there were 4 Brits in the main draw.

Not to mention the score.  ".......was in real danger after dropping the opening set in a tie-break".  He lost the first set 6-4.

Yes on the men's side, and by direct entry or via qualifying.

Yes, I agree, Madeline - direct entrants excluding WCs plus qualifiers is I'm sure what's meant.

I gueess LLs made it under their own steam, if luckily ?

Hi Madadman.  You seem to have slipped in there very quietly with your first ever post. Just wanted to say "Welcome".

Does it count if a player came through qualies but needed a qwc?!

Ha Ha, I did think about the qwc / qualify scenario, but decided not to go there since it must be very rare for Brits, at least in recent decades.

Personally I'd count this. However arguably meritorious the qwc, they would have 'proved' themselves in qualifying.
